Discussion: Why Trump's US-Mexico Border Wall May Not Be So Easy To Build After All

The people who say that the wall will cost $10B-$12B are the same kind of people as the ones in the Bush administration who thought the Iraq War was going to cost no more than a yearly subscription to HBO.

Walls don’t work. History shows this.
Hadrian’s Wall did not work.
The Great Wall of China did not work.
The Maginot Line did not work.
Fortress Europe did not work.
The Berlin Wall did not work.
Fixed Fortifications never work. You can go over them, around them, under them, or through them.
They are a waste of time and effort when you take into account the population size you wish to exclude.

The real reason the wall won’t fly is cost. It will cost hundreds of billions or maybe trillions for the full length of the border and given the drug cartel’s tunneling capabilities probably won’t stop a damn thing.

Alert. Your snark meter needs adjusting.

But, like pyramids, they are expensive public works projects that generate a lot of good jobs.

Of course here in America we need to spend at least as much on roads, water supplies and other infrastructure construction just to remain first world.

The two words you need are ā€œobvious bullshitā€, but the Bundys who support Trump are swallowing it with enthusiasm.

O beautiful for spacious skies,
Up there above the wall,
For purple mountain majesties
We cannot see at all!
America! America! Trump walled us in but good,
And brought us angry bigotry
Where once a nation stood!

Yeah. Not sure that came out the way I wanted it…

Dammit - I’m stealing that. Pissed off that I didn’t think of it first.

What is the point of even discussing this? Even if Trump were somehow elected, Congress is not going to approve funding for something like this, regardless of who is in control.

There can’t be more than 1/3 of the border that isn’t mountainous.

And forcing the Mexican government to foot the bill won’t be easy

Good fucking FSM. Try impossible.

Why not say ā€œwe are going to tax all foreigners living abroadā€ and speculate on how feasible that would be to collect?

Is the MSM congenitally stupid?

Trump doesn’t care about those pesky treaties. He’s gonna get his way by sheer force of personality. He’s used to yes-men saying yes sir and doesn’t have a clue about how the world of government works.

This article and your comment both try an apply reason to a proposal by a Presidential hopeful, but both assume the audience this proposal is directed to can be reasoned with… sigh.

I’d also suggest checking out the movie ā€œMonstersā€. It shows a Maginot Line-like wall constructed on our border to keep the alien ā€˜monsters’ out… until you look more closely and it shows the wall is unmanned, full of holes, and abandoned years before. Outside of the metaphorical quality of the story, it’s great science fiction made for under $30,000, literally.

Of course the wall is b.s. So is ā€œbringing jobs back from China and Mexicoā€. Imposing tariffs is forbidden under GATT and a trade war would end up wrecking the world economy. Just Google Smoot-Hawley. There is not a single Trump campaign promise that would be kept. Nor are they intended for that purpose.

Someone I work with the other day mentioned Trumps wall and laughed even harder when I mentioned a tunnel!

If he did get elected, no way he builds a wall. He will come out and say ā€œI meant a wall full of names of people I deportā€ or some other nonsense. He’s an ass clown.

On NPR the other day they interviewed some Congressman from PA who has endorsed Trump (don’t remember his name). He weaseled out of the question by saying ā€œThis is 2016, walls can be electronic.ā€ The reporter pointed out that there is already a ton of electronic surveillance, including drones, on the border, and his response was, ā€œWell, they’ll add more agents.ā€ OK…

I’m surprised he did not say ā€œwe’ll add more voltage!!!ā€ā€¦ Morons.

He’s an ass clown. That’s why all these Hitler comparisons are a joke. Hitler was a dead serious person with a depraved agenda. Trump is putting on a marketing show so that his TV gigs and licensing agreements will be going full tilt boogie after the election is over. He has established a great TV viewing base, and a great market for license products. But he’s not going to be President.

What, someone actually took Drumpf nonsense about the Great Wall of America seriously? Surely you must be jesting…
