Yes, what if Ford and/or others file lawsuits in both criminal and civil courts in Maryland? All relevant witnesses will have to submit to depositions under oath and could also have to testify at trial. If such a suit gets filed before a vote on Kavenagh, then that could give many Senators a good reason to vote No.
When you openly fabricate a bogus allegation based on an ancient rumor with no evidence at all to support it, you have to expect that it will weaken your case rather than bolstering it. Dr. Ford’s story is very weak. It is devoid of checkable details as if carefully designed to be unfalsifiable and it is suspiciously devoid of corroboration. Given the context in which it comes up, the overwhelming likelihood is that it is nothing more than a politically-motivated smear. When Ms. Ramirez comes along with her risible story, that likelihood becomes a near certainty.
Face it Dems, you went too far, you tried too hard and you jumped the shark.
Oh and by the way, Ronan Farrow now joins Walter Duranty in the Pulitzer Prize Hall of Shame!
If I were to make a sweeping generalization about all men based on my own circle of friends, I’d say we all get plenty drunk and still know a seduction from an assault. When Republicans, do it, no man will ever be qualified for anything again.
While fundamentally idiotic, this comment is too well-written to be the product of a Trump-addled brain. It has to be some sort of meta-snark.
Merrick Garland.
Did anyone ask whether she still stood by the statement in the letter that kavanaugh had only ever treated her with respect?
I am beginning to think that the only thing necessary to sink the Kavanaugh nomination would be to read his yearbook and ask him to explain it
Trump isn’t even high on Kavanaugh. (Or at least he wasn’t – now that the Democrats are pushing back, he doesn’t want to lose because he thinks people will assume he has a tiny porcini penis.)
But this judge is like CPAC made flesh. The establishment see in him the pinnacle of all the social programs they have had to avoid saying out loud:
etc.
The GOP will go all-in on him because he is them. Trump just needs someone who will agree he can pardon himself.
I personally think Kavanaugh did more damage to his chances with his interview last night than any additional women going forward ever could. He clearly went to Trump University for their course on handling accusations of misconduct.
He doesn’t think he even knew her really…
He didn’t drink in high school…
He was a virgin well into his 20’s…
Whatever he did when he was 17, there’s absolutely no doubt that he was a heavy drinking horndog. This opens him up to a whole new collection of accusers who will attest to his drinking and sleeping around. Worse, it shows him to be a liar and pretty much still the same person that attacked Dr. Ford. If (and it’s a BIG if) Susan Collins were looking for a way to oppose him, these are the grounds for it.
I am only guessing at the frantic and threating behind-the-scene activities being carried out by various Republican “advisors” and “strategists,” but I hope Michael Avenatti has his women under 24-hour protection. I doubt that Michael Corleone’s “friends” were any meaner or more nefarious than Kavanaugh’s “friends” at this juncture. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/michael-avenatti-reveals-details-about-new-brett-kavanaugh-accuser/ar-AAAC5LX?ocid=spartanntp
They are digging in their heels because this is their one shot, their one path left to a clear 5-4 majority on the highest court in the land for the next 3 decades. Not a trivial thing to just back down on when you’re so close. Especially if it’s something you’ve been working and working on since perhaps the 70s.
And what’s to stop them? So ok, the 2018 Mid-terms will be sacrificed to a temporary blue wave that might last a couple of years or so. But then just like with Thomas and Scalia (who were/are clearly suspect and damaged goods for the positions they have occupied), this guy will sit in a lifetime appointment on a body that has the last word on the country’s law and overall direction for the first half of this century. And he won’t resign or step down for any reason, any more than you think RBG would at this point. Can he really be impeached by a Democratic Senate, should it materialize? Has this ever been done?
I think it’s obvious why they’re digging in their heels. There’s a good chance the GOP’s going to take a beating in 2 months. They may lose a chamber of Congress as a result. Putting Kavanaugh on the bench would let them keep pursuing an agenda stymied by a minority position in congress at the SCOTUS. All they need do is construct their wants in the form of a lawsuit and fail upwards to Kavanaugh and his buddies. And they get what they want.
We had a lot of Evangelicals and Mormons in our town when I was growing up and my mother was the county health nurse so we got some pretty funny stories from time to time. My mother worked with healthy babies and mothers, as well as teenage pregnancy and STDs, especially emerging issues like AIDs and papilloma viruses. It turned out that a lot of young women adhered to the belief that their virginity remained intact as long as they refrained specifically from vaginal sex. One day a nervous girl came in confessing that she had “done it” without a condom but couldn’t possibly be pregnant, could she? My mother was a bit surprised by this assessment and the other health nurse asked how she was so sure. She said, “because we only do it the 'back way”. To which my mother’s compatriot said without missing a beat, “That’s no guarantee. You can still get pregnant.” “You can?” she asked. “Yes, of course, where do you think lawyers come from?”
I was thinking the same thing. Republicans were clinging to “not a rapist” and I admit there is substantial doubt still. All we have is circumstantial evidence and two accusations that are difficult to corroborate. Perhaps an investigation would shake loose more, but at the most all we have is suspicions of a poorly disciplined privileged youth. But to advance this choirboy image is just too much. It flies in the face of too much evidence. Now we must disbelieve everyone and everything, even his own notes, to believe his current story. The man has just revealed himself a shameless liar.
I read that story, too — or a similar one. Didn’t the man apologize and feel shame and remorse when the victim gathered her courage and wrote him?
awww, guess she didn’t know his character as well as she thought…certainly not enough to vouch he’d NEVER do something like that
Suspiciously devoid of corroboration huh? So naming the other person in the room and asking the FBI to investigate is your standard of devoid of corroboration? Good luck with that incredibly weak argument.
I can’t wait for Senator Kamala Harris to do exactly that. Kavanaugh was near tears during Martha MacCallum’s softball interview.
