Discussion: Why Letting Trump Be Trump Is Killing His General Election Prospects

Is this a surprise to anyone? The only surprise may be that the self-demolition is happening so fast.

GOP Congressmen are going to try to distance themselves from Trump and argue: ā€œI’m not going to be put in a position of responding to every comment Donald Trump makes.ā€ Do not let them get away with this. Trump will be their party’s Presidential nominee. Either they express their disagreement with Trump’s positions, or they are in agreement with what he says. There is no middle ground.

I suspect it’s too late to start over. The walls of his campaign are twisting and crumbling on weak footings. Too much water in the concrete, to use a metaphor he should understand, though I doubt he’s ever gotten that close to the grunt and grind of actual construction.

Meanwhile, Hillary is admiring her solidly framed edifice and beginning to consult with decorators.

I do not care how he self destructs I just want him to hold on until the election in November when he can take the Republican Party down with him. This particular moment in history started in earnest in 1980 - although its genesis probably was there from the 60s. Ronald Reagan took Republican demonization of the government, education, unions and the social welfare fabric public and now 36 years later his message has borne the fruit named Donald Trump.
Electing Hillary Clinton, turning the Senate blue and making inroads into the House can help to begin the process of the change most American citizens want and Obama thought he could deliver eight years ago.
The fiilibuster by the Senate Democrats yesterday was a tiny step in the right direction. I hope the question asked by my Senator Claire McCaskill rings loud and clear during this election - why are we afraid of the NRA?
By the way Bernie Sanders who is making demands of the DNC and HRC because he believes the nominating process of the Democratic party needs to change was missing in action yesterday. Coward.

At this rate, his post-convention bump will only get him within twenty-five points…

That’s basically the Republican’s problem at this point. Conservatives, for some reason, think being an asshole is the apex of wit. If a candidate can’t fake it with a wink when they get to the general, then they’re toast. For the Republican Party, honesty is definitely NOT the best policy.

…(4) he simply collapses all at once like the USSR in the late 80’s

Hopefully he and the whole Republican party.

In this week’s Bloomberg poll, 55 percent of likely voters said Trump’s claims about the judge bothered them ā€œa lotā€ and only 26 percent said they were bothered not at all by the claims.

And there’s that number again - 26%, the crazification factor. It’s not a surprise. Trump gets about 60% of Republican voters, who represent about 45% of the electorate. Do the math - it comes to about 27% of the total. That’s Peak Trump, and as long as he hews to the same lunatic line, it’s not going to change.

That was what, 1988? After 8 years as VP and 4 as President, I don’t think GHWB had much of a pivot.

Trump is the symptom, not the illness. The actual problem is that the Republican Party has become an ideologically isolated island. As such, it’s incapable of connecting with the majority of the country, and instead offers liars, con artists and, especially, theocratic authoritarians at election time. Trump isn’t that different from the other amateur kookoo candidates that we’ve seen in the GOP presidential primaries (Steve Forbes through Herman Cain and Ben Carson). What’s different is that they were crazy enough to nominate him.

Ol’ Ron could do the fake Irish smarmy ā€œMorning in Americaā€ pap and people ate it up. Drumpf’s morning is full of Mexican rapists and roving bands of heavily-armed Muslim assassins with suicide belts. He doesn’t do ā€œAw shucks!ā€ just the ā€œOl’ Shit.ā€ He ain’t making the sale/scam.
