Trump: You know, Jeff, Riker’s Island is not a nice place. And by the way, Paul Manafort has been very helpful to Ivanka and Jared.

Jeffrey Rosen: I understand.

Remember when trump told law enforcement in a speech that they don’t need to be gentle with suspects? Manafort has emerged as an exception to that rule.
“When you guys put somebody in the car and you’re protecting their head, you know, the way you put their hand over?” Trump said, miming the physical motion of an officer shielding a suspect’s head to keep it from bumping against the squad car.

“Like, don’t hit their head, and they just killed somebody — don’t hit their head,” Trump continued. “I said, you can take the hand away, okay?”

The problem isn’t that Manafort is getting special treatment to avoid a bad prison, but that bad prisons still exist. Our justice system is designed to ruin people, not rehabilitate them. We get upset when a judge saves a “good kid” from having their life ruined, when we should be upset that we’re destroying anyone’s life.

Happy to hear Manafort will remain safe and healthy, and that he is not being treated so unfairly any more. The government has a lot of making up to do for how very unfairly they treated such a good man who kept his mouth shut.

Waiting for a tweet from Trump that he definitely did not have anything to do with this and knew nothing about it, but he guesses somebody (totally on their own) thought it would be a good idea.

There are laws, but no justice.

It’s not clear what motivated Manafort attorney Todd Blanche to send his May 17 letter demanding that Manafort stay in federal custody, or why he did so one day after the Senate confirmed Rosen as deputy attorney general.

It’s unclear how McConnell prioritizes who gets confirmed.

Manafort couldn’t go to Riker’s because of his gout. It’s well known that particular lock-up feeds very limited diets to its prisoners, mostly steak.

I’m old enough to remember when impeaching Barr was actively being discussed. I guess that’s water under the bridge now.

From The Hill 5/22/2019:

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said she couldn’t support Rosen because he would be “learning on the job” and has a “history of partisanship that risks undermining the independence that we have so badly needed.”

Laughable or a huge business opportunity? I want my Manafort ringtone, and I want it now!

Things are hard all over. No more After Eights during the turndown service too.

Of course if he’s pardoned, he’ll go to Riker’s for sure and without delay.

I think you put your finger on it: He was put there to turn up the heat. I’m told by knowledgeable people that Riker’s is the US version of Devils Island.
