I’m not going to wring my hands or pander to a demographic that typically works against the best interest of the Democratic party. I’m very much in favor of where the party is today and where it is going. I think the portion of the white demographic, people like me, are on board with our progress and understand where the Party is going and what we stand for. Those in my cohort that don’t like Dems for any number of nativistic reasons I think works against our party and are not a demo we need to “adapt” our priorities to court. Loop in more Sanders and Warren type appeal, certainly, but not at the expense of the gains we’ve made understanding and representing the broad base we have today.
There’s the racism I was talking about.
The way I see it…Hillary will have the female white working-class vote if she continues to play it smart, and sticks with her focus on advancing women’s issues based on parity in the workplace and in our private lives. Security is a big issue for women…and most women I know at least, don’t need a gun to prove they passionately desire a safe and secure home life too. So I hope Hillary tells the NRA to shove those little pink guns up their tight little asses.
The male white working class vote is a toss-up among the Republican candidates for the most part, as it usually is. Which one?..I have no idea.
They’re all an amalgam of spoiled elitist rich guy assholes, backed by other filthy rich guy assholes. I suspect many have never had a working class job in their lives for any serious length of time, if at all. And No, McDonalds doesn’t count, little Scotty Walker. That jerk has been in public office in one way or another his whole adult life, sucking off the government teat that he seems to rail against everybody else doing.
All the homespun tales of being a “son of a mill worker” or “the son of butcher, a baker, or candlestick maker” is just a bunch of bullshit. I tune out whenever I hear politicians use that crap like its some kind of necessary trope when running for office. Very rarely is there any authenticity to those ‘origin stories’, especially the way they get told and spun. Makes me want to barf up my All-American Apple Pie.
And good lord…what’s JEBYA! gonna do to relate to the working class man? Borrow some knee-slapping, brush-clearing pointers from brother George? Will he make it seem like he wants to have a beer with you too? Or is it the Nascar dude that’ll get his attention, even without the Confederate flag? Maybe he can borrow George’s cowboy hat. Do they wear cowboy hats in Florida??? Anyway, he’s gonna have the hardest time of it if you ask me. He’s a fucking legacy baby, all the way, in everything he’s done or accomplished to date. That’s all part of being a fucking BUSH. Can’t get around that one…and even if he tries, there will be plenty of people around to remind him, that downplaying his family, only makes him look more like an entitled prick than he already is.
BTW, it was so nice to have a President after Bush, like Obama, that could toast a real glass of champagne without having to worry he was gonna fall off the wagon and make a fool of himself. Bush was able to accomplish that even without the booze.
Why does appealing to the white demographic means you have to define the white working class as being victimized?
Whatever.Get over yourself already.
You are telling me that we have to tweak the Democratic party to look more like Jim Webb’s vision for the party and I’m telling you that you are wrong.
Ask Lizabeth since they are the one asserting that they are being discriminated against because the Democratic party spends too much time courting minorities and not enough time pandering to whites.
58.0 Clinton
15.8 Sanders
11.6 Biden
1.4 Webb
0.8 O’Malley
0.2 Chaffee
Please explain some of the offensive racism that the white working class has to face.
The biggest example of how wrong you are about how this demo will support Dems if we represent their best economic interest is their fight against ObamaCare.
For exmple:
Basically, Brownstein suggests that working class whites continue to misunderstand their own interests. Obamacare will benefit them more than almost any other group, but a barrage of misinformation from the Glenn Becks and Rush Limbaughs of the world has convinced them otherwise. They continue to think that only other people will benefit.
[MotherJones][1]
If your theory is correct, then ObamaCare should have been the biggest white working class demo recruitment tool since the New Deal. How’d that work out?

If if the GOP strategists were smart, and I assume they are, they would move to put Trump on the ticket. Trump’s support is real and non-transferrable but a lot of the non-college educated working class who usually stay home on election day would come out to vote with him on the ticket.
Anyone curious…I came across this interesting cheat sheet from the Atlantic. Obviously its their take on the clusterfuck of candidates:
Also…something really funny I saw last night on DailyKos:
To me, that’s hysterical. There are so many of them they can actually form their own basketball team, if any of them were actually capable of playing the game…which I seriously doubt they are.
Kasich’s approval rating in purple swing state Ohio with its 18 electoral votes is 55 percent. I watched his announcement yesterday and think he would be formidable if he could break through the noise.
Why, O’Malley and Bernie were made to feel silenced by these demonstrators. Bernie, O’Malley, and indeed all those well-intentioned white people who support them, were made to feel as if they weren’t being listened to, as if their entire lifetime of achievements were as nothing, like there were being shouted down, disrespected, denigrated, and their interests subordinated.
Yeah, it just totally sucks to be made to feel that way, doesn’t it? Unimaginable being made to feel like that every waking hour, really. If only they were black they wouldn’t have to put up with such as that.
Me too. I worry more about him than I do Walker. I remember writing a post here a month or two ago saying he would be far more menacing should he run, but thankfully at this point his name recognition isn’t as top-tier as some of the others.
Everything I’ve read about him and his anger management issues indicates it would be fairly easy to walk him into the kind of Sonny Corleone trap Rove engineered for McCain in South Carolina in 2000, though if he ever became a real threat.
Losing his temper can be an asset if he directs his rage at the right target.
Many, many white people without college educations are not stupid. Very, very few of the white people without a college education who are not stupid vote, or will ever vote, Democratic. That’s just how it is. The idea we aren’t getting their votes because we’re not sufficiently left wing is dogmatically pleasing but empirically false. Or “stupid” as we call it when Republicans believe things that aren’t true because their dogma tells them it must be so.
Wow. How homogeneous of Mr. Kilgore.
The WWC are not all alike.
–Non-southern whites in households making under $30,000 favored Obama in 2012
–A slim majority of younger WWC’s favor same-sex marriage.
–Younger WWC’s are also more concerned about the environment.
–and so on
The majority of WWC will vote GOP in November 2016 regardless of whether the nominee is a hero, but the Dems can make inroads around the edges through a vigorous targeted campaign on certain wedge issues.
Steve, you know Bernie got arrested fighting to integrate Chicago schools in the early 60s, right? You think that as a first-generation Polish Jew in a poor section of Brooklyn he’s always assumed he’d be heard? If you’re looking for a subset of people treated as badly in the history of the last century as American Blacks, Polish Jews wouldn’t qualify for you would they? What are a few million exterminated in concentration camps compared to Jim Crow?
America has never listened to Blacks … except for blues, and jazz, and soul, and rap, and poetry, and MLK Jr., and Obama. In the 60s in the Midwest I didn’t know a white kid who wasn’t reading Malcolm X. Probably not a representative sample, but still, America is African culturally in a proportion far beyond our genetic African ancestry (which, too, far more of us have than is acknowledged).
Yeah, I heard that he’s thin-skinned too. It kind of shows on his pouty looking face. Seems he expends a lot of energy looking like he’s biting his tongue…whereas Christie is just the opposite…He lets it flow uncensored, with complete abandon. That guy has no impulse control, period. To me, Kasich seems like the kind of guy that also has a hard time giving eye contact. Its almost the first lesson you learn in public speaking classes. At least to pretend like you give a shit by looking people in the eye when someone’s talking to you. They all have their quirks…and none of these second and third-rate wannabes are worthy of the Presidency.
