A Coast Guard officer … spent hours on his work computer researching the words and deeds of infamous bombers and mass shooters …
His work computer. That would be a Government (Homeland Security) computer. All Government computers come up with a banner when you log in that, among other things, tells you that using the computer is a consent to monitoring, and that you have no expectation of privacy on that system.
So, the moron can’t read? He didn’t believe it?
I’ll bet he’s still wondering how the authorities caught on to his activities.
I’d say he’s lucky that breathing is an autonomic response.

“Dem Hit List.” The people who have “hit lists” always seem to fill them up with democrats. Or media figures. Or those seen as progressive. Or minorities. Wonder why that could be? 
Sounds like a wise decision.
The public has the warm and fuzzies for the USCG for their role in rescues at sea, maintaining aids to navigation and public safety on waterways, but it’s main mission from the start has been smuggling interdiction and armed defense of coastline and harbors. Since 9/11 their military nature has become more apparent such that the public believes their role has shifted, since they always seemed so friendly and benign, but the CG was born as a law-enforcement and defense cadre and has always been so.

Not quite. Mueller did not become Director of the FBI until September 4, 2001. The Moussaoui affair took place in late August. There was no Director of the FBI during the Moussaoui kerfuffle. The FBI may have screwed up the Moussaoui investigation, but it wasn’t Mueller’s FBI at that point.

Well, it is true that the Coast Guard started as the Revenue Service, but it’s maritime safety function grew more important as smuggling became less so–apart from Prohibition, of course.
One quibble with your comment: That crazy guy, although I’m sure he would be disavowed by members of the Corps, is not an ex-Marine. There are not ex-Marines, only former Marines, even this guy. No one seems to know why that is so–I’ve asked former field-grade Marine officers–but they all agree that there are only former Marines.
