Discussion: Wheaton Faculty: Reinstate Prof Suspended After Muslim Solidarity Campaign

Discussion for article #244987

The faculty council expressed “grave concerns about the process" in the letter.

Hope so. 'Cause otherwise, all their Facebook posts may be fair game for some small-minded, vindictive administrator…

Christians are so awesome!

Already removed her from their website:

Hmmm…is it time to play “one of these things is not like the others” again?

I realize academic jobs are hard to come by today, especially those that offer tenure> But unless the professor is a conservative Christian herself, which I doubt based on what she was willing to do, Wheaton is no more a real university than Liberty and if she can find a position elsewhere, she ought to.

To acknowledge monotheism violates their statement of faith? Interesting.

Wait, they FIRED HER for claiming that Muslims and Christians worship the same God?
I guess none of them ever read the Bible.
You know, children of Abraham and all that…

She’s still there for now:

She’s a political science professor.

They are an Evangelical College, with the operative word being college. As such, they have a duty to educate their students with an open minded world view. Different facets of complex issues should be discussed in order to gain understanding. If they’re not willing to do that, then they shouldn’t call themselves a college.

For all its faults, Wheaton, in contrast to Liberty, has a reputation of being a real university where real scholarship is done. Their student body is a bit brighter, too, with an average ACT of 29 as opposed to 22 @ Liberty. I imagine that the admin is looking for a way out of the corner they´ve painted themselves into, as to ignore the unanimous vote of the faculty council would be a shot heard around academia.

Whatever we think, the faculty agree to sign the school’s Statement of Faith. I believe they overstepped their bounds by punishing her, and trying to fire her. It’s a fine line here because tenure is supposed to grant faculty some academic freedom. In this case, her statement wasn’t in an academic setting or publication, but a Facebook post. The school could have overlooked it. A (former) FB friend of mine was upset because I don’t believe there a war of Christianity in America. I now think if there is a war, it looks like this case- people trying to purge those who aren’t pure in their teachings. I say it that way because the reaction of the school is anything but Christian.

Clearly the administration of Wheaton College answers to a higher power - wealthy donors.

Maybe the faculty could seek the power of the GOP presidential candidates. they love to showboat about persecution of Christians, and here they actually have one.

This restores a little of my faith (hah!) that the faculty there, and students, are protesting this.

Muslims and Jews are the children of Abraham. Christians follow Christ as part of a triune God, as the Bible says. We don’t know if the board has already discussed this difference with her, but if the teacher feels she can no longer accept that doctrine, why would she still want to be there?

I’m waiting for Rafael “Christian first. American second” Cruz to weigh in on this.

This is one of those ‘stand up and be counted’ moments we encounter in life.

If you are on the faculty at Wheaton College and don’t stand with professor Hawkins you should be ashamed and you should regret your silence the rest of your life.

When you’re losing students and faculty who already signed onto a biblical interpretation of the world, perhaps you should reconsider.

It’s like being too much of a rightwing corporatist for the Koch brothers.
