Manafort got his start long before Trump. He was associated with Ford, Reagan and Dole’s campaigns, holding major positions for Reagan and working closely with James A. Baker III. He consulted for Geoge H.w.Bush. There are decades of sleazy political activities that involve Republicans.

The target has not totally escaped the outcome of this humiliating revelation. When Manafort checked himself into a tony Arizona rehab clinic, Andrea writes that “my dad […] is in the middle of a massive emotional breakdown.” It is, perhaps, the breakdown of a man who knows he’s been caught and that he might finally have to face the consequences. Perhaps this explains Manafort’s recent disoriented appearance in court — pushed into the courtroom in a wheelchair, in strange rumpled disarray, without his tailored suits, his once carefully dyed hair graying, missing one shoe. We do see the cracks in the facade of power. But somehow, we know it’s not enough.
This is bullshit on the epic corrupt scale that Manafort created for himself. He’s trying to angle for an easy placement with lots of privileges based on supposed mental incapacitation, or even a shortened sentence on compassionate grounds. He has enough capacity to stonewall, commit perjury, and pass info along to Dump’s team. That’s the true mental status he should be judged by.

He’s giving Trump grist for the pardon explanation. Now Trump can point to how badly poor widdle Manafort has suffered in the clutches of the Deep State.
They’ll all be pardoned, that’s why Barr was brought in. His experience in the pardoning the Iran-Contra traitors will be put to good use for Trump’s pardoning of his treasonous co-conspirators.

Kind of interesting how blackmail is so central to their governance. I suspect the Bezos honey trap was the tip of the iceberg. There was also the story about Cohen securing the religious right’s endorsement via Falwell’s pool boy.
No doubt there is a similar story behind Lindsay Graham’s terrible self-debasement before Trump. Probably for McConnell as well who is highly susceptible to blackmail given his proclivities for young men.
