Discussion: What the Goodell Presser Reveals About His (Terrible) Leadership Style

Discussion for article #228003

Whatā€™s described here is not poor ā€œstyleā€ ā€“ whatever that is.
Whatā€™s described is lack of competence and failure to perform due diligence. Heā€™s in a job with near dictatorial authority. He doesnā€™t, for ex, need to consult with a board, but to just act swiftly and decisively in matters of moral turpitude.

It was really painful watching that presser. I doubted his sincerity; his words did not seem genuine to me.
Maybe the problem is that heā€™s an awful speaker. Or maybe he just didnā€™t believe the words he was saying and was just going through the motions.

fundamental misunderstanding? (otherwise, color me confused.)

am totally amazed that thereā€™s no effective pressure for him to resign. this has been a totally painful stumble-fest from day 1.

I read on DK that Frank Luntz orchestrated all that. Figures.

Deadspin reported that none other than professional liar for hire Frank Luntz helped craft Goodellā€™s response to the domestic violence issue in the NFL. When you hire Frank Luntz you know what youā€™re getting, the fact that Goodell hired Luntz does not speak well of Goodellā€™s character.

I thought sport was supposed to broadened oneā€™s character not shave it down to the heartless nubbin weā€™ve seen displayed by the manly-attribute-free NFL leadership.

He may be able to cower the union into a weak (for the union) CBA and extort CBS into a ridiculous Thursday night football deal, but that is intimidation, not leadership. There is so much lacking in this situation itā€™s incredible!. Ray Rice tells him he punched his fiance. 2 games. Video shows Rice dragging his fiance out of the elevator and dropping her on her face! 8 games! then THE video comes out and GONE! Is he dense to the realities of domestic violence? Why wasnā€™t Riceā€™s admission enough for him to come to the indefinite suspension? Or dropping her on her face? He is a politician, not a leader. In my opinion he couldnā€™t lead a group of monks in silent prayer. Leading is being out front and being firm and reasonable with your decisions. Not hiding and sending a flunky out to answer question. He needs 4 women to tell him what domestic violence is? 4 WHITE women for a league with more than 60% back players Dense again. Unfortunately for him he didnā€™t protect the shield this time, he shit on it.

couldnā€™t disagree more with that last sentence. thatā€™s what heā€™s been doing the last several years and it has been a train wreck.

Goodell has proven since he started this practice of disciplining players for off-field incidents (something the NFL didnā€™t do before him and something the other sport leagues donā€™t do) that he is an awful judge and jury. Personally, Iā€™ve always felt he had no business doing this. It always smacked of ā€˜put them in their placeā€™ practices and seemed mostly about feeding his ego and avoiding forcing the owners to manage their teams.

BTW, so long as everyone is pointing at him and not the owners, his employers (said owners) will continue believing heā€™s doing a great job. Sure if it gets too hot, theyā€™ll sacrifice him, but itā€™ll be a cushy fall.
