Discussion: What Exactly Is Jade Helm 15?

A true story from a friend of mine who lives in a town of 10,000 people in Texas. There was an election held the other day to vote for city council members and 300 votes were cast. Moral of the story? They wouldn’t know if their voting rights were taken away.

“Residents’ responses ran the gamut from “would the court be offended if I told the colonel I didn’t believe a single word that he just said?”…”

Does this qualify as a Sincerely Held Belief? Based on such Sincerely Held Beliefs is it now OK for these patriots to take their own action? Local militias could (finally! whoo-hoo!) take up arms and take on these invaders. They could wear their 3-corner hats! And they could never be held accountable because - Sincerely Held Belief.

I couldn’t help but think of the Jade Helm conspiracy nuts when i saw the news footage of the military helicopters rescuing Texans from their flooded homes this weekend.

Wait, Texas needs a reason to be insane?

Making Texans insane isn’t a drive, or even a putt. It’s a gimmie.

They never had a problem with military exercises in Texas when Dubya was president.

If George Bush were president, the folks in Texas would be throwing flowers at these soldiers. The fear of an army takeover is based on pure, out and out hatred and fear of the black guy in the White House. The base of the GOP is stone cold white racist.

This is amazing. Not too long ago I remember a Republican saying that all the Generals were going to quit, or something like it. And now …? Therefore the only way to describe the last three governors of Texas is in a conjugation of them: dumb, dumber, dumbest.

I will note however-- that our Gov Gregg Abbott has not yet poked his pointy-head–
out of his undisclosed location-- since uttering his tinfoil stupidity about 2 weeks ago.

Nothing says ‘d^mbass’– like a long silence-- following a magnificent gaffe.

I still haven’t figured out the basic question: Why would the US want to take over Texas?

Local radio station WTAW made available both the audio and visual presentation
that Army representatives gave to the Commissioners Court of Brazos
County, Texas in February while seeking their approval for the training
exercise.

The Invasion of Texas is probably the only invasion in history in which the invaders sought prior approval from the territory being invaded.

And this article isn’t even an Associated Press reprint. Looks like TPM is going in for the false equivalency narrative so much in vogue with the mainstream press.

Could TPM avoid quoting nutbags from Reason? Please?

I think the issue lies with the fact that even though America is usually “rah rah military”, we don’t like the sight of troops operating on our city streets running around with guns and military hardware. It makes people nervous and strikes directly at the heart of our sense of safety. Truth be told, Americans would rather have the military at arms length, operating “over there” to keep us safe “over here”. But operate over here to keep us safe here? I guess that’s too close to home for some people.
