“Recognize” is the right word I think but more a matter of culture than institutions these days. Can’t tell with Sanders, who frankly doesn’t seem very bright much less reflective, but folks like Kelly probably do see it, they just can’t see it for what it is. It’s the normal world to them, the way things are supposed to be, and their position in it is beyond question. Conversely those who do question it, and certainly those rude enough to say its name, are the cause of social problems by definition…
Can’t remember who made the observation but the best perspective on modern conservatism I’ve seen is that it should be understood fundamentally as resistance to changes in hierarchy.
