It’s hard for me to tell the extent to which this shit is deliberate but it certainly seems to be all of a piece with the general program: confuse Americans until like Russians, they have no idea what’s real or not, what’s right or wrong.

To be fair, I think it’s more like 30% are the “lost souls” you’re describing. Unfortunately, there’s also another 15% or so who still inhabit the Republican Party and exploit the former to maintain their hold on power. Although I despise them to the core, I must admit they’ve done a masterful job of framing and shaping the media and the vocabulary of the debate. Throw in the rise of the Internet, a supine media, a complacent “I’ve got mine” middle class and some targeted Russian interventions and here we are.
I do still have some faith in the feedback mechanisms in our political system but I must admit I’m happy that I happen to have a few more options than most Americans. I’m personally watching the Alabama Senate election for signs that folks might be willing to start waking up. We’ll see…

Yes. Their definition of fake news is anything remotely negative about them that’s stated or printed. Doesn’t matter if it’s true. If negative, it’s inherently fake.
