Discussion: WH Can't Name 'Any One Thing That You Could Do' To Prevent Gun Massacres

After making myself read Jake Tapper’s Twitter stream today, I am in no mood to put up with this shit (don’t do it unless you don’t have to talk or see anyone for at least half an hour). The goddamn NRA is half death cult and half right wing extremist movement and continuing to grovel before them is collaboration with absolute evil as surely as collaborating with the Nazis was. Yeah, I got your Godwin right here, gun fondlers. You know what you can do with it.

Although I can’t stand Sanders, this is the type of gotcha question that gives journalism the generally bad name it seems to be getting. Too bad she could not just tell the reporter to go fuck herself. Sad.

It can’t just be prayed away. The shooting in the Texas Church is a prime example. The victims were praying & still lost their lives.

I did the same thing and wept for those children and their families. They are frozen in time forever 6 and 7 yrs old. It was preventable just as Las Vegas was. The biggest mass shooting in U.S. history happens on Trump’s watch and his spokeswoman says -nope nuthin’ can be done, live with it. And the babies murdered in Sandy Hook, sorry we can’t do anything to prevent another of these.

Bull Shit, Bull Shit Bull Shit.

Mass shootings: “I don’t think there is any one thing that you could do that could have prevented either one of those instances, horrible, horrible tragedies,” Sanders said.

Failed pipe bomb terror attack: “In terms of New York we know for a fact this individual came through chain migration system, this is something the president has been outspokenly against and something he wants to stop,” Sanders said. “So that’s a fact that we do know.”

As others have pointed out, there are a lot of things that can be done to reduce the number of shootings and the number of people killed or injured by guns each year. They are not doing anything at all, and basically say that since one single thing won’t totally eliminate all mass shootings or all gun violence, doing nothing is the only response. By the way, mass shootings are terror attacks to the victims, at least, even if they don’t fit some specific definition of terrorism.

However, when it comes to a failed terror attack by a Muslim, there’s an immediate response - shut down the chain migration system, in this case; implement a Muslim ban more generally. Got news for you Sarah - that’s not the “any one thing” that’s going to stop all the pipe bomb or other kind of bomb attacks. It’s not going to stop a terrorist from going out and easily purchasing some assault rifles and killing a big number of people. It’s not going to stop home-grown terrorists who may be likely to self-radicalize partly due to this administration’s policies.

If you do all you can to reduce terrorism, even ineffective things, then do all you can to reduce the gun violence. No single thing will do it in either case. Do every reasonable thing that can be done.

And she has the gall to wear her so-called Christianity like a cloak! Shameful!!

This administration seems bent on solving problems that don’t exist and changing the subject when confronted with problems that do exist. Then again running Hispanics out of the country and locking down the border will give folks like the WalMart Shooter in Colorado fewer hard targets…

Compare the headline of the TPM story with this one:

But what does this have to do with net neutrality?

It will cause mass shootings to increase. More buffering will mean more reloading.

““But if you could name a single thing that would have prevented both of these I would love to hear it because I don’t know what that would look like.””

And yet again the MSM allows the GOP to define the issue and the battlefield. Nobody is claiming that there is a solution that will “prevent” these attacks from happening. Nobody. The 2nd Amendment exists and it’s not going anywhere, but it is not an absolute. All people are saying is that there are reasonable, Constitutional solutions that will make these incidents LESS LIKELY. Allowing the GOP to define the issue in absolutist terms, ad absurdum, is a failure of journalism of highest fucking order. It is an argument 100% designed to completely shut down all discussion and debate on the issue and the MSM is complicit in allowing it to succeed.

Exactly. One idiot immigrant does a failed pipe bomb, let’s close the borders. An American Citizen slaughters dozens of Americans with legally-bought guns, ‘nothing we could do.’

Fuck You, Republicans.

Burying the intestines of a freshly killed rabbit by the light of a full moon works better than prayer. My sister did it once and swears the next day she was free of her impetigo.

Because only Amurikkkans have the right to mass murder Amurikkkans!!!

What’s “gotcha” about what the reporter asked? It was a legitimate question about a serious problem in the USA. Just because there isn’t one simple answer doesn’t make it an invalid “gotcha.” (or was your comment snark?)

I still say Chris Rock has the best solution: Bullet Control.

“You got pecs? I got TECs.”

No one knew, no one knew that murder prevention could be so complex.

I mean, obviously keeping guns out of the hands of psychotics is a non-starter, since we can’t deny gun manufacturers the potential profits… and we don’t KNOW for certain that any given psychotic is actually going to shoot anyone. It’s fine.

It’s what makes Sarah’s lack of concern (on this issue at least) all the more stunning. She’s the parent of small kids who she sends to school everyday. Can she not imagine the grief of those parents???
