I agree–IIRC, troops were told a “special visitor” was arriving once they were assembled and I highly doubt they a) carry their MAGA hats with them at all times or b) were allowed to run back to their barracks to get a hat once they found out who it was. I’m surprised he didn’t toss them into the crowd a la Puerto Rico and the paper towels.

Why were they even allowed to be taken on the plane? I do not think he and Melania should be able to be photographed wearing his campaign crap (MAGA, USA, POTUS, FLOTUS, and whatever other acronym he and his jackals have appropriated to promote and make money) while he is performing his official duties as president.

It is an interesting comparison when this sort of thing comes up. While my father and brother were active duty, they simply would not say a word good or bad about the president or anything political at all. My father explained that prohibition sometime before I hit my teens. He was an officer, was avidly in agreement with it and had to discipline soldiers over the issue in the past. I imagine if he had been active today, he would have been expecting these people to be talked to with emphasis on the officer with the Trump banner. Even long in retirement, during the Bush years, he refused to suggest Bush Jr. was anything less than the president to him even when junior’s incompetence was on full display. My less than safe for work remarks were not welcome.
My brother never said anything at all until the first Gulf War. This is about the only subject he would not have a comment on. Being civilian I could say what I wished. He was paranoid to even enter into a conversation on the phone with me over topics covering politics. Eventually he had to specifically tell me to back off as I was making him nervous as hell. On the other hand, he was not far from retirement, so as he said, it was open season then. I recall during the Clinton presidency, Navy personnel on ship in a video saying that Clinton was not their president. Can’t find the reference, but it was actually horrifying to me at the time to see it because of that background.

With deference, I think we are concentrating on the wrong thing here, Trump’s behavior. It was his usual boorish, borderline illegal behavior. What else is new. I want to know about the troops. How many do we have who are in The Trump Camp. Why? If he ordered them to arrest his political opponents or to enforce a cancellation of the 2020 presidential elections, what would they do? And as to a useful reporting exercise about Trump’s trip, why have we not seen any reporting on the reactions of the troops generally? Did any troops refuse to attend Trump’s rally? I hope that reporting is out there, and I have just missed it.
