Discussion: Wendy Davis 'Overjoyed' After SCOTUS Ruling Against Abortion Law

Wendy should be allowed to kick Perry, Abbott, Patrick and Paxton in the balls.

My kid stayed up to watch that debate. He became a huge fan of Kirk Watson who took up the mantle with his parliamentary procedure chops as soon as Davis was made to stop.

The intensity of that time was amazing. She absolutely did the right thing by her party and by that issue, even if she lost the Governorship later. The arc of history etc.

It’s good news, but a bit late. Most Texas abortion clinics have already closed.

Is the glass half full or half empty.

The requirements that doctors who perform abortions maintain admitting privileges at nearby hospitals and all abortions be performed in hospital-like surgical centers, have caused more than half of the state’s abortion clinics to close. Up to nine more clinics would have closed if the justices had voted to uphold the law in full. The stricter building requirements were on hold while the Supreme Court reviewed the case.

@antisachetdethe I’m thinking of Cecile Richards and the four hour grilling in front of the House GOOPs who accused her of so many disgusting things as they tried to trash Planned Parenthood. She must feel a lot better. And surely Ann is smiling down from her heavenly perch.

True. Plus, technological advances in medicine and especially drugs, are making abortions in general safer, easier, and rarer.

More women die in childbirth than while having an abortion unfortunately. Any number of women on this forum alone could tell you horror stories about their experiences in trying to obtain a safe abortion, including leaving the country for the procedure, and it’s something one never forgets.

Twelve other states had unconstitutional laws put in place similar to Texass in regards to this state law…so yeehaw x’s twelve. I really don’t get why they had to put the building requirements on hold. What’s the difficulty having to decide that I wonder. Seems also like a no-brainer to me, but I don’t think like a bunch of conservative assholes that don’t know shit about women’s health. I’m looking at you Thomas.

The guy that reports on the Supreme Court on MSNBC just said it also included the part of the law that dealt with building requirements being overturned as well so I think I’m a bit confused as to what he was referring to.

The most striking thing about HB2 to me is that it was based on a CLEAR and OBVIOUS lie that was recognized by EVERYONE. It would be nice if Wendy’s vindication had come in the form of a governorship, but this will do.

This is good. Now if only the GOP could be billed for the tends of millions of dollars this has cost the clinics, the citizens of the state and so forth.

And of course the Texas legislature will come back with a law saying the hallways only have to be an inch narrower than they said before…

Let’s not forget about the importance of striking down the hospital admitting privileges requirement for abortion doctors.

When doctors apply for malpractice insurance they are asked if they had ever been denied hospital admitting privileges. It’s a simple yes or no question to check off; there is no “please explain” section that allows one to say, “Yes, I was denied, but only because of a TRAP law designed to block access to abortions.”

Insurers could then deny the doctor malpractice insurance and thereby the ability to practice medicine and make a living.

This is just as insidious as requiring expensive and medically unnecessary building modifications, and I’m glad the SS recognized that.

She’d just hurt her foot. There’s nothing there.

I’m overjoyed, too, Wendy. Thank you for everything you did.

I just wish you would learn how to be a better candidate and run again. And please hire a different campaign manager.

And with all due respect to Justice Breyer, I think you should have written the majority opinion. I would pay to read that.

@antisachetdethe She has metaphorically …

Sometimes the critters that report the news are the last ones to know what they’re talking about.

I actually turned the radio off during a gubernatorial debate - honestly, love her as I do, she was awful. There’s no reason for that happening.
