Hate to say it, but doubtful Trump didn’t even register at that level. For one thing, that would require Trump or his fans to understand the idea of object permanence (i.e. he’s completely failed to give them a Mexico-funded wall to this point without losing their support - why would he think the support would go away now?)
No, the real answer is so, so much lamer. People are calling him weak, he can’t stand the thought people consider him weak, bullying and threats make him feel strong, and yelling the same BS over and over and over has worked out for him. Sadly, we’re watching a 70 year old man do nothing more than the verbal version of holding his breath until Mommy and Daddy give him a pony and tell him he’s a good boy.
