I think the reason that SNL has never had a good Obama sketch is because I don’t think any of the writers they have actually know the first thing about the news. They have just come across as bits written by someone who has occasionally walked by a newsstand and seen a NY Post headline.
I am so proud to admit I have NEVER watched SNL - mostly because it’s way past my bedtime. Now I am glad
Meh.
Tell me again about the so-called liberal media. Welcome to corporate whoredom, SNL!
I was done with it years ago. Remember the idiotic Victoria Jackson?
Carlin had wit so yes, the word even wasn’t meant as a slight, and he wouldn’t use material that isn’t material.
Every time Republicans proudly cut funding and bad things happen as a result, they call it another Obama scandal and the headline writers and news readers fall in line.
I don’t remember SNL doing a skit on Shrubs scandals most of which were far worse. Yes, Will Farrell did a great job playing W. But did they mock him sitting in a classroom reading a children’s book when the county was under attack? The fibs that caused the quagmire in Iraq? Gutting FEMA, letting a city drown causing the deaths of 1800 people. Letting fundamentalist Christians run the justice department etc.
This is S&L’s version of Satire. Yes?
Everything that is wrong with everything is Obama’s fault. Thanks Obama.
So, now, the criteria for a scandal is simply the beltway media labeling it as such? I don’t care about SNL. My reaction is to the disingenuous headline here on TPM: what scandals?
Yep.
How many time have they tried to label something as “Obama’s Katrina”? That tells you that these so called objective beltway “journalists” clearly have an agenda.
i don’t know who lorne michaels thinks his audience is but it sure as heck isn’t primarily republicans. if he wants the last 6 people who watch this lame, unfunny show to stop watching he should keep bashing the president and democrats.
SNL needs to bring Dennis Miller back. He would fit right in. Bus in Mike Huckabee’s fawning audience and install signs for “Applause” and “Laughter” and they can broadcast on Fox to more directly reach their demographic.
To be fair, I did think that Tina Fey’s Sarah Palin was pretty funny back in '08.
Does anyone in the SNL writing room actually read a newspaper? Increasingly their political humor seems like it is based on entirely on skimmed over buzzfeed headlines, instead of actual stores. Political humor is tricky. It requires in depth knowledge of the topics at hand as well as a point of view. If SNL can’t handle it, they should stick with fart jokes and leave the adult stuff to Comedy Central and HBO.
Right? I think they were trying to make fun of how Obama is allegedly politicizing Ebola, which is dumb because the entire point of this sketch was to politicize Ebola.
But by then Tina was no longer a cast member, she returned for a cameo.
For me SNL was must see TV and the cast/writing were solid all the way through the end of the Bill Murray era in 1980. After that they highlighted a few solid performers like Eddie Murphy, Al Franken, Dana Carvey, Tina Fey but I’d stopped watching in the early 80’s. I figured it was a generational thing and I no longer identified with the writers sense of satire or the players delivery.
From reading the comments of others here it’s difficult to determine exactly what demographic they are trying to play to these days. Is really what twenty somethings find funny?
Spot on comment. For the last many weeks My Comcast / Xfinity news feed - on every Sunday - has run the “More bad news for Obama” story - which are always just clips from various Fox News programs strung together to create a narrative. It’s never any “real news” just Fox news opinion hit pieces.
Today was no exception. Clearly a trend has develop when you can almost count on it.
SNL used to be funny and it used to hire decent writers. Politics aside, the whole skit was on the same level as “herp derp ‘selfies’ are totally in right now let’s make a skit about selfies because hot item of the week Kardashians Jodie Arias trial because reasons make it funny”.
It’s comedy for buzz-word receptive imbeciles. If Chevy Chase were dead he’d be rolling over in his grave.
Only because Fey was quoting Palin verbatim.
