Faux News bait. David Horowitz will now get a month’s worth of bookings to rant about leftist professors.
First class with free booze?
“Flakes on a plane”
She better hope she has tenure already!
Did this happen at 4:20, by any chance? “Halnon has been a professor of sociology at Penn State Abington since 1999. Her academic papers and books have included “Women’s Agency In Hysteria and Its Treatment,” “Defending the Self In a Total Institution: Staff Prompting and Patient Burlesque,” and the essay “The Power of 420” in The American Drug Scene: An Anthology.” http://www.phillymag.com/news/2015/03/17/karen-halnon-penn-state-abington-smoking-on-plane-venezuela/#l7OcU2gsGb6VzOog.99
What a goddam lunatic.
Ooh…BIG day for Penn State!
have no idea what was/is wrong with this person - - - but the behavior is uncomfortably close to that of a few friends who struggle with bipolar / extreme compulsive behavior / and other forms of mental illness… and if this is in any way similar, there will be an agonizing period of time spent on regaining some semblance of stability. It is one thing to simply be a total jackass & that deserves plenty of derision - but when things genuinely just intermittently go haywire in your brain it is a hellish curse & the unrelenting criticism is as cruel as laughing at the blind.
I couldn’t care less about the rant, but lighting up the cigarette on a plane was an imposition on other passengers. Suppose a fellow passenger has respiratory problems?
I’d prefer the snakes.
Tequila fermented with the best blue agave plant that Venezuela has to offer.
Could be just alcohol-fueled that makes her seem crazy.
LOL…lost her goddamned mind haha…how much you wanna bet she was hittin the coca down there like it was going out of style?
Penn State is having a banner day.

Got that right. I suspect she is getting almost nothing but scorn and ridicule from left wing blogs, etc, but the RWNJ crowd will claim she’s the spokesperson for all of us.
I don’t understand the distinction here. So if someone’s only a jackass some of the time, it’s a mental disorder and they deserve understanding. But if they’re a jackass all of the time, they deserve derision? Seems to me that BOTH groups suffer from a mental disorder; with the full-time jackasses having things worse. Nobody wants to be a jerk. We’re products of our genes and environment, and the more of a jackass someone is, the more help they need.
That’s the problem with dealing with bigots, is that they just don’t know what they’re doing because they suffer from mental problems. And yet rather than understanding that these people are a product of their environment and need help, we take pride in insulting them. And rather than curing them of their bigotry, it only has the opposite effect; just as you’d expect to see. And for me, as long as the target of your derision doesn’t read your comment, there’s no harm. But if you’re addressing someone who’s either a part-time or full-time jackass, then you need to be nicer about correcting their issues and understanding that this isn’t their fault but is something they need to fix.
This crazy woman will become the poster child for right wing conservative attacks against [leftist] college professors. Look for Ted Cruz et al. to use this footage to defund colleges in the U.S. [sigh…]
Thanks for this. I hope in turns out that some combination of dehydration/cabin pressure/alcohol was the cause. Self-destructive behavior warrants our understanding and sympathy. I’m sorry that the other passengers were forced to endure this and I hope the woman gets the help that she needs.
Another possibility is that her behavior was exacerbated by or caused by a bad reaction to an antimalarial medication. Mefloquine (often branded as Larium) can sometimes cause some very odd behavior.
