Discussion: Washington State Police Chief Pledges Not To Enforce Voter-Approved Gun Limits

so what happens if one of his officers gets shot, and the doctors at the hospital decide not to enforce medical treatment?

My family lived in that neck of the eastern Washington woods for about eight months or so when I was a kid. In a super tiny town named Marcus, about half an hour outside Kettle Falls on the Columbia River. Which would make it maybe forty-five minutes to an hour outside of Republic. This was quite awhile ago–Mt. St. Helen’s erupted while we were there, had to wear surgical masks to school because of the ash. The stuff settled on the cars as thick as snow. (Was actually kind of cool.) My dad was a hunter. Used to have friends in Republic. (My dad’s politics were always sort of strange. Incredibly liberal in some cases and somewhat conservative in others, but not dogmatic enough about anything to be a true libertarian.) So I’m fairly familiar with that area…and, yeah, just like you said, that part of Washington is full of fucking rednecks and assorted nutjobs. The man’s job is pretty secure, I’d say.

The Attorney General of the State of Washington needs to move on this guy and remove him from office.

Btw… here in AZ our legislature in their infinite wisdom said it was okey dokey and legal to carry your treasured hogleg into your neighborhood watering hole. So, if i am gonna imbibe i’ll do it at home thanks all the same. There is a paranoid numbskull i have seen in my neighborhood super market who habitually wears a Colt 1911 pistol. You should see the shoppers exit w/o their groceries when he shows up. All perfectly legal but stupid on an epic scale.

From Prof Timothy D. Snyder’s 2016 ‘On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century’
Rule 17: Watch out for the paramilitaries. When the proLeader paramilitary and the official police and military intermingle, the game is over.

Inspirational and well worth knowing, the other 19 rules are:

  1. Do not obey in advance.
  2. Defend an institution.
  3. Recall professional ethics.
  4. When listening to politicians, distinguish certain words.
  5. Be calm when the unthinkable arrives…
  6. Be kind to our language.
  7. Stand out. Someone has to.
  8. Believe in truth. To abandon facts is to abandon freedom.
  9. Investigate. Figure things out for yourself.
  10. Practice corporeal politics. Put your body in unfamiliar places with unfamiliar people. Make new friends and march with them.
  11. Make eye contact and small talk.
  12. Take responsibility for the face of the world.
  13. Hinder the oneparty state.
  14. Give regularly to good causes, if you can.
  15. Establish a private life.
  16. Learn from others in other countries.
----17. Watch out for the paramilitaries. When the proLeader paramilitary and the official police and military intermingle, the game is over.
  17. Be reflective if you must be armed.
  18. Be as courageous as you can. If none of us is prepared to die for freedom, then all of us will die in unfreedom.
  19. Be a patriot. The incoming president is not. Set a good example of what America means for the generations to come. They will need it.

Or thermonuclear weapons.

Maybe it’s really time to split the country. How long can sane Americans live in a state of fear of going out in public? Going to any big public gathering (see: protest) becomes an exercise in paranoia and fear. My kids worry when they go to the movies. If these people want to sell assault weapons to anyone of any age, that’s fine for them. I should not have to live with that decision.

Police and prosecutorial discretion is a fact of life. Would you call for firing a police chief who told his people not to arrest those who j-walk, or smoke pot in public?

Sauce for the goose…

As long as I am Chief of Police, no Republic Police Officer will infringe on a citizens right to keep and Bear Arms

So I guess this guy is A-OK with school children running around with AK-47s, machine guns, rocket launchers, grenades, etc.? Can’t infringe on arms, can we.

“I cannot and will not enforce this law,” Culp flatuated on Fox & Friends Sunday, hoping to ignite an uproar.

“As long as I am Chief of Police, no Republic Police Officer will infringe on a citizens right to keep and Bear Arms, PERIOD! - Chief Culp”

What if the aforementioned citizen is not a member of a WELL-REGULATED militia?

The new law restricts, reasonably, the sale of firearms to those 21 and over. It won’t be long before someone under 21 in this jurisdiction buys a gun and kills or commits other crimes with it. At that time the city will be subject to a costly and embarrassing law suit.

Unfortunately in these small population areas in the NW, no.

There is a NW movement exactly this direction in rural counties.

In the last election 8 OR counties passed a “pre-emptive” county law saying they would ignore any gun restrictive Federal/State laws that might show up. (Know they can’t do that, but they are gearing up for a fight.)

There is an ongoing problem that these rural areas feel that they are being “dictated” to by urban population centers.

And they are now making dumber choices and being led by the nose by hate groups to “defend their rights”.

Initiative 1639, which passed with 59 percent support, raises the age to buy semiautomatic rifles to 21 and enacts a list of other restrictions and penalties.

This was an initiative approved of by residents of “Republic”. Not the Federal government. He basically doesn’t give a sh*t about the people he was sworn to protect and serve.

Cops don’t get to pick and choose which laws to enforce. Similarly they don’t get to interpret the Constitution. Seems to me he’s admitting a violation of his duties and should be removed from office prior to Jan 1.

Redneck cop Culp’s 2nd Amendment logic:
Do not enforce laws for minimum age of gun purchases. Six-year old children will be able to buy guns.
Do not enforce law restricting right to bear “arms.” Bazooka purchases will not be interfered with by Republic Police.

Red neck or not this guy will do a 180 by Jan 1 and find some excuse to enforce the law. If not, right after the first crime is committed with a gun that would have been restricted had the law been enforced, this town is bankrupt. The Mayor and every one else knows that. By Jan 1 that cop will be enforcing the law or no longer be a cop. That is how it will go down.

Seems like Chief Culp must have gotten his legal training at Trump University.

I understand what you’re saying, and Pennsylvania is famous divided like that for centuries back. But small enclaves of people with extreme views are by definition not the mainstream, so I’ll stubbornly insist they’re outside the mainstream of national thinking on this.

I’ll give you that, for sure!
