i have long feared that he would learn of an imminent terrorist attack and turn a blind eye so that he can have his W-on-mountain-of-rubble moment.
I assuage that fear with the actual knowledge that we still have strong institutions which will not allow him to ignore it.

Several things here. First of all, you are talking me off that ledge, so-to-speak. Gut instincts and reality are two different things. What my gut instinct tells me, though, is that with regard to T rumpp, expect anything. The creature’s brain is demented, and he is in a position of authority. Very bad things happen when those two conditions are put together in one person. We know his “national emergency” is completely made up and is nothing of the sort, but remember, he is under a very, very extreme amount of pressure from Putin, from Mueller, from his own actions, from the American people, and most of all, from Hannity and Coulter! Throw rational thought away. He wants dictatorial powers, and when push comes to shove, he’ll do anything to try to get them. I’m not saying he’ll succeed. I am saying he’ll try. For example, his national emergency could be a warm-up act to a declaration of martial law. You and i and everyone knows he can’t do that. Everyone knows that but him. He is that kind of lunatic. Therefore, if he sees an advantage to himself in making that declaration, don’t discount the possibility that he thinks he can make it happen. I admit that i am making some wild assumptions and predictions, but again, remember who we’re talking about. This fake newspaper gives him ammunition for what he wants to do, not what he actually can do. But, in his mind, there is no difference.

@tsp - well here’s the thing - in a dictatorship the way they control the press is through threat of jail and torture. That’s how they do it and they can’t do that here. We are not there - the constitution may be a little battered and bloody but it is still standing.

I agree that the country would be screaming for his head but he’s not such a thinker, not such a cause and effect sort of guy. He’d just remember how popular W was right after 9/11 and believe he could be the savior he longs to be.
Is he delusional? Of course. Is he above dangerous acts to save himself? Not so much…
But we can agree to disagree because this is all just a little thought experiment in my head and, thankfully, nothing more.

It’s one of the things that comes up almost every day because we went through that with W. But once bitten twice shy and it would never happen that way again.
I don’t worry about things that haven’t happened that I can’t control. IF it happens I can tell you absolutely that the GOP would pay a terrible price for it. It’s no secret that he does nothing.

He might like to do such a thing, but he’s too cowardly to actually go through with it. He had the Republicans all lined up to support his “State of Emergency.” (Probably because they realized it was the only face-saving way for him to end the shutdown.) But he couldn’t go through with it.
He’ll bluster and threaten, but he’s too chicken to actually do anything. Especially if it looks like it might involve work on his part.
This, by the way, is another rule of negotiation he never learned. Don’t make threats you’re not willing to carry out. Otherwise you just look weak and ineffectual
