Discussion: War College To Probe Allegations That Sen. Walsh Plagiarized Thesis

Discussion for article #225536

Iā€™m a democrat. Stop with the hollow excuses. Resign. Go away. Yourā€™e an embarrassment to all who serve honorably.

Jeez, if they take away his Masterā€™s degree, heā€™ll still be more educated than Jan Brewer. No reason to resign. Move on about your business. If hookers and diapers wonā€™t keep someone from winning re-election, why should this be insurmountable?

Yeah, itā€™s not like he drove his car into a river with a young lady who was not his wife, swam away, and reported the ā€œaccidentā€ the next day. Besides, plagiarism didnā€™t force Joe Biden to resign from the Senate.

But, Senator Walsh should have corrected his thesis sooner.

I would say someone who earned a CIB and Bronze Star served honorably. If he knew he was reporting someone elseā€™s work as his own, he should have reported it on his own and much sooner.

Walsh could have done himself a favor
by self-reporting the allegations to the War College and asking for a review of his work. If he had reported himself, said that any non-attributed work was inadvertent and asked for a chance to make revisions, heā€™d have more credibility than he does by getting found out and then throwing up a list of seemingly implausible excuses.

Iā€™m intrigued by the possibilities:

ā€˜We, who examine war, including, mostly, how to wage it, and minorly how to get away with the ->ā€œbad thingsā€ <- necessarily associated with it, such as yr murders, genocide, yr rapes, yr destroying kids, yr crippling & maiming & general permanent devastation of civilian populations, yr destruction of public works & private property yr negligent disregard for the rights of others, & excessive & selfish use of gasoline, oil, food, air, water etc, hereby declare ourselves satisfied you willfully &/or negligently with reckless disregard missed a whole bunch of third party attributions & quote marks, therefore youā€™re subject to our qualified approbation & disdain (ā€˜Bah, mecch & ptui for that thing you did/didnā€™tdoā€™) & in our view no longer entitled to be automatically regarded as a warrior of wars, or indeed wear your hair that way.ā€™

Also, a question for the rest of youse: Do you suppose itā€™s possible there are active Republicants in high mucky-muck positions in the War College just itching to pull the self-righteousness trigger on Sortasenator Recruithair here?

Pathetic. Even for you.

The Bronze Star is a peculiar award. Most are awarded for meritorious service, colloquially referred to as an ā€œI was thereā€ medal, It can also be awarded with Combat ā€œVā€ device (for valor) for a specific act of heroism in combat.

I am a Montanan and a Democrat. This is terribly disappointing and Senator Walshā€™s response is tepid and unsatisfactory. Walsh was not my first pick to replace Senator Baucus but when the Governor appointed him, he got my support. I think in light of this very fundamental breach of academic ethics, Walsh should go. I hate saying that, because I think Congressman Steve Daines is an evil, horrible person that I donā€™t want to represent me or the state that I love. Shame on Walsh for not owning up to this before asking to be appointed to replace Baucus and a lesser rap on the knuckles to Governor Bullock and his staff for not having this vetted.

This is disappointing but itā€™s done. Is there an alternative or are Dems stuck with him? If he is going to be the standard bearer then tough through it. He was 9 points behind in the polls so his chances were marginal anyway.

Run with the NYT as a liberal rag out to get a real soldier. He was a soldier but the system wanted him to be a scholar and it just wasnā€™t in him. Have him tell the War College to take away his degree and confess openly to poor judgement. Cris-cross the state on an apology tour.

Plagiarism is something only Dems would care about so have them hold their noses and vote for him while complaining loudly that heā€™s too damn conservative for their tastes but what can you do?

Itā€™s all true.

The ā€œmasterā€™s thesisā€ was all of 14 pages long, under 6000 words. Wow, what a Herculean undertaking! It makes his degree seem like something one would get for sending in cereal boxtops.

Just when you think heā€™s reached bottom, he finds another shovel.

Before being appointed to the seat by moderate-liberal Democratic Governor Steve Bullock, Walsh had already been exposed and officially reprimanded by the Army for having strong armed his subordinates in the Montana National Guard into joining a private Guard lobbying group. Politically, he was a horrible choice from the get-go. In effect, Bullock, with the DNP behind him, handed a Senate seat to the ultra-conservative (and nonbeliever in evolution) Daines.

Plagiarism is wrong, but then who reads a masterā€™s thesis? Not his adviser at least.

He and Randy Paul should start a club, the Senate Plagiarizers Club of America (SPCA). Sadly for Americaā€™s plagiarizers, it looks like it would be down to one member by the end of the year.

Walsh needs to resign and let Schweitzer step in.

Stealing from one person is plagiarism. Stealing from several people is called research.
