Can you imagine that? From a GW Bush appointee.
The American Putsch comes in the courts, not the streets nor the nature reserves.
Judge Leon is a Dubya apiopntee who has become a go-to jurist for the RWNJs. He slapped down the NSA (but only under Obama), he slapped down the State Department in the FOIA case in which the right was trying to get all of Huma Abedin’s employment history with State and now this. HE IS THE JACKASS WHO RULED IN 2005 THAT PRISONERS AT GITMO HAVE NO RIGHT TO CHALLENGE THEIR IMPRISONMENT OR SEEK RELEASE (he only changed his tune on the subject after the SCOTUS issued a stinging rebuke of that decision). IN his history, he also helped investigate Whitewater and advised Cheney during the Iran-Contra investigation. I can’t fucking stand this guy and you should take not of him, because he’s precisely who a President Cruz or Trump might appoint in 2017. He hangs out with Clarence Thomas.
He is a dillhole who revels in his power and is clearly a conservative ideologue. He also went to my law school (Suffolk Univ.)…to my shame…but I suppose the conservative bent is to be expected from some Suffolk alum. Suffolk hosts the Beacon Hill Institute, which is a conservative economic think tank funded by the Coors and it holds great sway there…surprisingly conservative bent for a MA school, especially one that produces most of MA’s litigators.
He is dangerous and a dangerous possiblity, and if you don’t believe me, consider this: his fellow conservatives try to put him in the same category as Learned Hand.
If only it was an oil company rather than The League of Women voters…
YES!!! Hammer hit nail on head! That’s why the SCOTUS fuss. It’s not about “balance” or “tradition”. It’s about victory and getting it from the Bench. The whole fucking American thing is broken and the Constitution Lovers broke it. Doing it the Founders way didn’t work for them in these times so they just fucked up the whole thing with partisan Judicial appointments, lawsuits which they object to when others do them and lying though their teeth. They have a media structure, cowered opposition and the American Majority, consisting of uneducated dumb asses voting for them.
They won.
I will not say that they won.
Yet.
But I WILL say that who we have arrayed to fight them are variations of asleep, distracted, perfect-the-enemy-of-the-good, myopic, feeling insulated by youth and a few other things that the MSM has researched on, focused on and sought to develop amusements to continue this state of affairs.
Well if Democrats want to win they best get on with it. Take this thing named “proof of citizenship” which is really "hassle likely Democratic voters’. If you want to win you have to make this a motivator. “Ill show the bastards” is the spirit Democrats need. The game here is that you will not. You’ll bitch and not vote.
That loses. So go get the needed ID. Organize and get it. Get transportation and information. Then get folks to wherever and get that fucking ID. Get the damn ID and then get to the polls. As soon as this GOP’er crap becomes a motivator…as soon as it motives what they do not want…it’s over and you win. None of these laws mandate insurmountable effort. They just fuck with you. So get your shit together…let folks know they’re fighting for themselves and get them to the polls.
It is fascinating that the Justice Department failed to defend a Federal official and that official won anyway. Yes, it is only a temporary order, but the judge expressed skepticism about the whole case in his order denying the TRO.
I expect that this case will fail on technical grounds, since those opposing the change to the Federal Form instructions failed to exhaust administrative remedies by appealing Newby’s decision to the full EAC. This makes the Justice Department’s stance all the more unusual, since, even if it disagrees with the substance of the decision, it should have insisted that Plaintiffs follow proper procedure before filing a Federal lawsuit.
Totally agree.
My Dad used to tell me that telling him he could not do something was the best motivator. In fact, that was how I talked myself into graduate school (when the Department Head told me that “I couldn’t keep up”).
Some of this Bernie stuff–with people trying to make a virtue out of sitting out the General if Bernie doesn’t get the Nomination–sounds like Little League ice cream parties. The amazing thing is that some people over 40 are saying it!!
Part of the Scalia-like minions that were packed into the Federal judiciary by the GOP: political hacks masquerading as jurists.
For some people they do. Sure, 95% of potential voters have the requisite ID handy, but they’re not the target. It’s the 5% who don’t have and can’t easily obtain the documents that they hope to keep away. It took me three trips to get my enhanced driver’s license in Minnesota because of the crazy requirements, and I have a passport and a global entry card and the freedom to use whatever time it takes me. They can truly make it hell for the less plugged in.
That said, I don’t want to negate your message: Democrats need to get out the vote, not just vote themselves, but drag, kicking and screaming if necessary, everyone they know and some they don’t to the polls, not only in Presidential election years, but off-years as well, especially local elections. The sleazy GOP took over many states that had been reliably blue by making sure they voted in those local, off-year elections, and for their effort they controlled redistricting in 2010 and have created a majority where they had none before.
Great message.
