Remarkable indeed. On one hand it’s a mundane and by-the-book arrest, if only the police behaved that calmly in every encounter. A calm, reasoned professionalism with a good take on the situation is exactly what we should want – but this is not quite that. Here’s a man whose photo is everywhere, who had not long before murdered nine people in cold blood after spending an hour with them face to face. They had every reason to fear for their lives, yet they were so calm it crossed the line into casual and even carelessness. It smacks of “Aw, shucks, he didn’t mean no harm. he’s just a good ol’ boy who got a little wild. Of course, we had to take him in, seems kind of a shame really…” And that’s what I hate about the South.
Had he broken grip and ran, would they have just stood there laughing and yell out “We’ll get you next time!”
At least they didn’t high-five him and they did catch him and take him into custody. I wouldn’t make too much of buying him a fast food meal, though, you have a responsibility for someone in custody even prior to arraignment (my choice would have been a moldy Bologna sandwich from the local lock-up – “get used to it”).
The cop had to resign, and yes, the family will sue and win. That was pretty much my point. Cops should not act like that, and it’s good to see the bad ones being penalized for it. But for every one of those, there are a thousand who don’t do that. There are over a million cops in the US, and you just go by what you see on TV, just like the FOX people who judge all blacks by what they see on COPS and other dumb shows.
The investigation is ongoing, so you have no idea if there will be charges, though I suspect not charging him was part of the deal with the Union to get him to resign.
That’s really the point, isn’t it? Michael Brown “looked like a demon” and so Darren Wilson shot him half a dozen times. Dylann Roof is an actual demon. He’s a mass murderer, known to be armed and dangerous. Yet the police acted like he wasn’t much of a threat to them at all.
So which is it? Will he face charges or was it “part of the deal” that he not face any? Because you can’t seem to make up your mind which of your various apologetics to stick with.
My comment about Michael Brown wasn’t even addressed to you. Please take a remedial reading course.
And if he wuz a Mooooslim you can bet your estate that da pOlice would’a stopped at the nearest Falafel King to buy him the falafel equivalent of the Big Double McAwful!
The investigation is ongoing, so neither of us know, as I said. You seem to think you know.
Stay on topic and don’t spread false info.
Roof wasn’t black enough to warrant a barrel roll or summary execution.
This is actually surprising since they knew the suspect was suspected of killing 9 people in cold blood. A disturbing (but probably accurate conclusion) is that the cops viewed Roof as “one of them” and so believed they had nothing to fear.
Let us just say the NC police did a good job, a group effort by more mature, black and white officers that didn’t look as if it needed to escalate. The florist lady and shop owner didn’t do a bad job either. The bigger cities and their terror-trained hair-triggers er, officers might want to channel a little of that more positive Southern charm…
Of course he was! He’s just a white confessed murderer. Now if he was an unarmed black guy or girl in a bikini , we’d be reading an obituary.
He was expecting to be “greeted as a Liberator,” no doubt.
