Discussion: VA Mayor Uses Japanese Internment To Defend Blocking Refugee Assistance

For all the great things the US has done there are a lot of horrendous things we did that no one talks about and seems to forget.

Speaking as a Virginian, I am saddened by this story. Besides being ignorant and un-American, this mayor is spreading hate.

Hey, remember that really shameful episode in American history that we’re still embarrassed about?

Let’s do it again!

A moral panic is a feeling of fear spread among a large number of people that some evil threatens the well-being of society.[1][2] A Dictionary of Sociology defines a moral panic as “the process of arousing social concern over an issue - usually the work of moral entrepreneurs and the mass media.”[3] The media are key players in the dissemination of moral indignation, even when they do not appear to be consciously engaged in crusading or muckraking. Simply reporting the facts can be enough to generate concern, anxiety or panic.
Moral panics have several distinct features. According to Goode and Ben-Yehuda, moral panic consists of the following characteristics:

Concern – There must be belief that the behaviour of the group or category in question is likely to have a negative effect on society;
Hostility – Hostility towards the group in question increases, and they become ‘folk devils’. A clear division forms between ‘them’ and ‘us’;
Consensus – Though concern does not have to be nationwide, there must be widespread acceptance that the group in question poses a very real threat to society. It is important at this stage that the ‘moral entrepreneurs’ are vocal and the ‘folk devils’ appear weak and disorganized;
Disproportionality – The action taken is disproportionate to the actual threat posed by the accused group;
Volatility – Moral panics are highly volatile and tend to disappear as quickly as they appeared due to a wane in public interest or news reports changing to another narrative.

***As soon as People Magazine comes out with a story Michelle Obama goes commando this will subside.***

Someone needs to be denounced, pronto.

Genius.

Indeed. Particularly the part of it being a short-lived fad…and usually one with an ulterior motive lying behind it, like the Ebola scare that magically completely vanished as soon as the election was held. The MSM loves GOPers/Teatrolls because they provide better, more sellable, soundbites…and the MSM is forever obsessed with testing its ability to affect and alter electoral results.

Mayor Bower seems unaware that none less than the Congress of the United States and President Ronald Reagan agreed that sorry episode was the result of “race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership”* – conditions the mayor seems to be suffering himself.

Go ask George Takai about those internment camps.

Every day it gets worse with these officials. We need a house cleaning from the smallest county to the most pompous Senator.

Yeah, all Ann Coulter has to do is raise her hand and there isn’t a damned TV, radio or print venue in the country that won’t grant her 10 minutes to say something perfectly vile and outrageous.

I had a professor in college who used to say that Americans think history begins at sunrise and ends at sunset. That was in the '60s, but it’s still true.

I knew a family that was interned. A lot of those “sequestered” had their land and property, um, stolen by white so-called Americans. Must be the model Israel is operating under.

“…it appears that the threat of harm to America from Isis [sic] now is just as real and serious as that from our enemies then,” Bowers, a Democrat,

and serial bed-wetter.

I mean, really? A few jihadists shooting up people in France is equivalent to the Japanese air force strafing and bombing Pearl Harbor? And even then it wasn’t okay to lock up innocent people.

So what does the ‘update’ show? That stupidity, fear and loathing is not confined to just one party? I wish people would study HISTORY and then study the aftermath. Executive order 9066 turned out to be a farce and one that is still being ‘debated’ on the West Coast where many of the survivors still live. Honest to God.

So how much money does he propose we give refugees as reparations in 45 years?

The movie “Idiocracy” was a Comedy, not an Instruction Manual.

So conservatives finally start picking up that FDR did some good things and… they go for the racial internment camps.
