Discussion for article #240244
C’mon Josh what a very deceptive headline. Meh
One vulture capitalist (Smizek) crashes and burns. Replaced by another vulturist, no doubt fresh from overseeing the ongoing degradation of the country’s rail network.
This is the guy who was bitching about Emirates Air in the United mag when I flew to SF in May.
U.S. airlines and our employees have shown time and again that we can compete with foreign airlines around the world, when we are on a level playing field. However, forcing free-market companies, like United, that must provide a market return on investment, to compete against the national treasuries of foreign governments is too much to ask for any industry. U.S. airlines can and will compete on a level playing field, but we’ll only have that if we compete against airlines, not against the treasuries of Gulf nations.
I didn’t like the opinion. I liked the delayed flight to Dulles even less.
UA, like most of the remaining airlines, is a sad shadow of its former self.

What is the world coming to when a political crony appointee can’t even get an airline to arrange personal charter flights for himself to his vacation home without stirring up a controversy? I mean, why even be Chairman of the Port Authority if you can’t get a little bit to wet your beak? If you didn’t pull stunts like this Christie would have no respect for you, and then how could he trust you to shut down a bridge when it needs to be done?
I just hope they scheduled at least a 737 for him, and not one of those crappy Embraer 145’s, or worse yet, a turboprop. Think of the embarrassment that would have caused.
Uh oh… wonder if Christie is on suicide watch yet?
Let the vise quickly and devastatingly close on Christie - resulting in ultimate finality!
The news for sleazy Crispie Chrispie gets worse by the day. He is stewing in his own lard from Bridgegate.
I am wondering whether his support in the Republican party is less than 0.5% or not. It would be really nice to see it actually round down to a nice fat zero.
How far back are you looking? Ever since the pilots’ strike 30 years ago it’s had lots of problems.
And no airline went bankrupt prior to the deregulation of 1978, thanks to the generous but cumbersome government approved oligopoly. The grandeur of those years wouldn’t have existed without it.
Someone said, " ‘Never get into trading favors in New Jersey’ is a truism right up there with ‘Never start a land war in Asia’."
Alas, he’s still polling at 2pct.
how is this headline deceptive? is it in any way incorrect?
Basing this on before-and-after, as in 9/11.
Let’s face it, airline customer service has taken a dive as we’re squeezed more and getting less.
Oh, wait. Sounds depressingly similar.
Time to stitch two jail jumpsuits together for hizzoner.
The reasons for this are complex, but it began with the merger of United and Continental several years ago. Continental brought a ton money to the deal which United wanted badly and in return handed over control of the company in almost every imaginable facet. UAL’s HQ used to be in Chicago, they are now in Houston which has always been Continental’s HQ. This could be a much longer rant, but you get the idea. How do I know how badly UAL has fallen (though it was never thought of too highly)? I’m a retired employee and I saw it play out it to my disgust.
After they finish investigating Christie, they really need to look at the cesspool that is the Port Authority. That entire operation needs to be revamped.
Seems pretty right on to me.
Delta bought Northwest, and Continental bought UA. Both southern-based companies.
And worse for consumers and employees.
Well, he was right. Airlines in the US used to have government set prices, and besides airliners were often civilian versions of something developed for the military, or benefited from government funded military plane technology. So they were protected and subsidized. Since deregulation, it’s been pure capitalism. It just took a while for the blankets and pillows and meals and reasonable free luggage checking and knee room to disappear as airlines compete mostly on price. There is no point in complaining about it. Between computers and the internet and free enterprise, it is what it is. A national airline subsidized by some oil funded state is outside normal capitalism and can offer whatever it wants to consumers.
Sucks, doesn’t it, for the rest of us.
And I surely will continue to complain and support any and all efforts for regulation.
