Discussion for article #225291
We’ll see. The rebels’ actions suggest otherwise.
Not to mention compromised data.
But it is also very possible–indeed likely–that the rebels are also frantically trying to figure out, and shifting their assessment of, what to do; this would account for seemingly contradictory responses or impulses hour-by-hour.
And I’ve got 100 rubles that Comrade “Strelkov” or WTF he’s calling himself today is on his way out of the country. He’ll disappear and Putin will claim they could not locate him. The good Comrade, however, had better be watching out for Russian “aides” with icepicks.
Or polonium in his tea. Or perhaps the Netherlands and Malaysia will consult with Mossad and then go after all those responsible.
Headline doesn’t match with the story. Former said the boxes were found and turned over.
Story says they were found and “would be handed over.” Big difference, especially amid stories that the rebels appear to be hauling the bodies away to parts unknown over the protests of investigators.
Wow, less credulous headline writing please? I know it’s the AP’s, but jeez. “Find?” “Hand over?” Should be “Claim to find” and “promise to hand over.” When it comes to the Caucasus Tea Party, don’t trust but verify.
Its worth noting that we are already speaking to a different “rebel leader”. I suspect he already has some of Putin’s aides serving as his bodyguards…whether he wants them or not.
The story contradicts the headline.
Exactly. I think the certainty of the headline is rather premature.

Can the recorded data be tampered with, as opposed to smashing the device so the data can’t be recovered?
He’s Comrade Strelkov, not Comrade Trotsky.
Considering the damage to many prior black box units, smashing the device so the data can’t be recovered would require running it through an industrial shredder. Several times even.
Nothing about this whole story suggests a reason to trust anyone or any reporting to date.
Best to wait for something consistent and more well investigated.
Historical analogy.
