Discussion: UK Lawmakers Recommend Tougher Rules On Facebook

Mark Zuckerberg, a callow youth while at Harvard, has somehow become even callower and unprincipled as an adult. Facebook has invited regulations and tough oversight due to their malfeasance and unscrupulous business practices. It’s ironic that though birthed in a republic, they’re the perfect tool for actual and would-be autocrats and dictators.

Markie Z was lauded as a hero, as a bright genius, and as a model to entrepreneurship. I suspect there were those that tried to pull the curtain back, that thought deeply on how this could go, but they were pooh-pooed for trying to rough up a golden opportunity.

You’d never see this happen here.

The current generation of robber barons are quite pleased that such important aspects of our society are still in a Wild West phase of development, and all they have to do to prevent the advance of civilization and order is prevent thoughtful people from engaging in the messy work of grappling holistically with this new world.

Defund academics, hide everything because it’s a “trade secret,” and whenever anyone proposes a study or a regulatory experiment, shout “free market!” over and over until they stop talking.

America: where we insist that every citizen shows up to the negotiating table uninformed, underpowered, and without the benefit of experience.

Didn’t Zuckerberg once hint at a run for President?

Just what we need :unamused:

Hope the OSC takes him down, hard and forever.

Mark is totally devoid of a conscience or any semblance of social responsibility. He lives in a tiny world with his money and similarly constructed wife.

Yet another case where I wish the US had enough common sense to rent a clue from the UK and EU.
I make no secret of my dislike and suspicion of Facebook.
All of this “we’re just a communication platform stuff, and what people 'communicate” is up to them…"
Including Russian Hackers, spies, and the usual collection of Americans who can’t think their way out of a sopping wet paper cup and don’t see any reason why they should, as long as they are “popular” on “social media.”
I have real news for you.
The vast majority of “social media” isn’t at all social, and what ought to concern more and more people goes unnoticed all the time.
I have no FB account. I do whatever I can to avoid them like the plague. I’m honest about it, and not a hypocrite.
But the next time you visit your favorite site, watch the lower left corner of your browser window as it loads (if you use Firefox, that is). Most sites, (including this one) pause just long enough to let you see they are loading something from Facebook.com.
I wonder what and why so much seems to be going thru their site, and just wonder who, what and why its so Ok with so many that they go thru FB so much without noticing.
I used to live in Cupertino. I’m old enough to remember it before Apple, and another company moved into “Silicon Valley” It was a company with the motto “Don’t be evil.” (We know how that worked out, just ask anyone in the PRC, (which btw DOES NOT include Taipei!)
The reason I mention Google is that they started with the best intentions. Events and Human greed caught up to them, and they were in the end, willing to be caught up in the money, the politics, and the greed.
I think FB is already there and has left Google panting on the side of the tech racetrack with an empty sipper bottle as FB takes a “victory” lap.
It may sound old-fashioned, and a bit perquackey, but I believe Facebook began at “evil” and has matriculated to rotten, awful and is headed farther into The Dark Side, while almost no one is looking.
They have bought and bribed their way into the bakery, and won’t be at all satisfied until they have a finger in every pie.
The UK and the EU can and do see this, and have taken steps.
Will Americans do so before everyone with a computer in the US ends up sucking Zuckerberg’s " thumb"?

It is not “meddling” in elections. They sabotaged the elections. And we still don’t know the true extent of the sabotage.

“Meddling”, the preferred, innocuous term by those who benefit from this kind of subversion, is your gramma talking up the cute boy who’s going to medical school, and disparaging the Bad Boy.

Whereas
Sabotage verb

  1. deliberately destroy, damage, or obstruct (something), especially for political or military advantage.

Subversion noun
the undermining of the power and authority of an established system or institution. “the ruthless subversion of democracy”
