“We don’t condone the use of graffiti to get this message across but we cannot get nor can we safely use, any dynamite."
We’ve come all that way for this?
Nothing will turn people away from your cause faster than senseless vandalism and the destruction of public property. Those who vandalized the statues on the South Mall are asking for their counterparts to strike back at the MLK statue on the East Mall, or the Chavez installation on the West Mall.
Where will it end? Burn down the Littlefield House?
I wonder if there are any German universities or colleges with statutes of Adolph Hitler on their campus.
I just bet there’s heaps of them. After all, it’s part of their heritage.
“We don’t condone the use of graffiti to get this message across,” student government Vice President Rohit Mandalapu told the Express-News.
Me either. I prefer this:
Agreed. It stinks of gloating. People need to recognize when the tide has turned in their favor and tactics need to change. The message needs to be something softer and more welcoming, even if it feels a little squishy: "It is heartwarming to see the outpouring of support for a modern and dynamic South, where all of its residents work together to be the most successful region blah (no Santorum) blah blah.
White person vandalizing a campus statue of a black hero: putting a noose around its neck.
Black person vandalizing a campus statue of a white-supremacist hero: spraypainting “Black Lives Matter” on the base.
And who is accused of having a thug culture.
I really don’t buy this “We’re just honoring our heritage” excuse as a reason to fly the Confederate flag or display statues of Confederate leaders. My Louisiana born and raised grandmother was a descendant of Jefferson Davis and even way back in the 60s she said, “It’s nothing to be proud of.”
Just a tidbit of arcane history…Calhoun County in Michigan, where Marshall is the county seat is named after John C. Calhoun too since way back to 1829. Shit, that guy sure got around. Sadly his infamy lives on, even in places in the north parts of the country.
Just piggybacking on J. Marshall’s editorial comment…
I agree. A much more fun approach is a college prank pulled off by a friend of mine. He and his buddies bought a bunch of brass polish and used it to shine the horse genitals on the statues in a major Miami park. It caused a minor uproar, mostly because the city had to send out crews (at some expense) to shine the rest of the statues.
No.
Betcha most of the vandalism is being done by white folk.
Pissing on the statues would be another alternative. Then UT could simply hose off the piss should it so desire.
… like “white folk” is a “race”.
I DO accept that we’re now seeing the early pre-Ft. Sumter days of a very long (and potentially confusing, amusing and, inevitably, violent War on Icons, in the course of which we’ll get to see a hell of a lot of official pomp and lack of circumspect and, with luck, at least one Banksy.*
(* The emergence of an American Banksy would end up being the most interesting aspect to arise from the current and coming Defacement Battles, but for there being no serious prospect of a future human civilization to ponder it. Instead, all these toppled icons will constitute hard spots below the grey-brown stinking toxic mud our six-eyed descendants will be constantly stubbing their 24 toes on.)
Actually, since many symbols of the Third Reich are banned in Germany and much of Europe, they use the Klan’s “stars and bars” flag so prevalent around this country as a substitute. I’m sure European skinheads are just celebrating their Southern heritage.
