Discussion: TX School Reviewing Book On Poverty Because Parent Thinks It's 'Marxist'

Discussion for article #232653

I have an idea … why not substitute the collected wisdom of $arah Palin as an example to further their writing skills?

Well… it would be useful to teach the kids the difference between nonfiction (Shipler) and fiction (Rand).

Many christianists would find Christianity and the words of Jesus Christ to be “Marxist”.

“Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Matthew 19:21”

Wait. Leaving aside the part where she thinks wretched, awful, turgid writing is a thing that should be assigned in English class to improve reading skills, this Texas lady thinks they should be forced to read works of fiction rife with open contempt for religion and repulsive rapey sex scenes?

There is only one way out. We ask our soldiers to die for our country: Now you do it. Let them have it all. Ban the books, gut the ACA, privatize SS, Bomb Iran, remove all the rules on Wall Street, kill public education, deregulate everything, cut taxes until you can no longer fill a pot hole, allow folks to open carry machine guns and deport everyone.

Its the only way to expose the bullshit. It seems folks cannot see through these scams so let them struggle through them. It’ll set America back 100 years, diminish us to a third world giant but hell we are going there anyway. “Vote GOP…and lets see the reality”

If this woman looked up ‘fucktard’ in the dictionary, she’d see her picture.

“…she felt it was inappropriate for students to read about social issues in English class.”
I guess that leaves out anything by Dickens. At least.

This woman is an obvious moron—she believes that Ayn Rand was a conservative.

I guess that’s why Rand supported abortion rights, was an atheist, and thought that churches should be taxed.

And Rand’s fiction is execrable and unintentionally hilarious.

Stop feeding the poor, close the public schools, close the borders, permit pollution at will, eliminate national parks and nature preserves, establish a state religion, permit discrimination on the basis of religion, race, gender, sexual preference , require women to carry every fetus to term, …the list just goes on and on and on.

You hit the nail right on the head! Many in this country and the ENTIRE GOP base doesn’t see the difference between fiction and non or if they do, they think one idea is just as good as the other. Thereby debasing ANY thought because no thought has any more weight than the other.

We’re seeing the fruits of this right NOW, no need to wait. Actually, no, I take that back.

The results you’re taking about are manifesting right now; many in this country will never see it.

Someone should explain to her those “marx” on the pages are printed words.

Education means never learning about anything you’re not already familiar with or being exposed to views or values you don’t already hold. I support this brave grizzly mama in her quest to keep her cub pure. There should be trigger warnings on all books or other reading matter to let potential victims know there could be unfamiliar ideas inside.
