You know, even in my darkest days I go back and forth on this. Chait says young people remain inspired by Obama. So do I. He has a claim on America, the best America, the America of our hopes and ideals, that nobody else does. More of us voted for Clinton. Not as many of us are as stupid and hateful as we may seem to ourselves right now. Having a bad day. Maybe we can come back at least part of the way from this. Ask me in 20 years. In the meantime we’ve got the stars, still, and music, and friendly cats and each other. I don’t know. I just don’t know. I go back and forth.

Where life suddenly has gotten more interesting in a good way is on the personal level. I’ve noticed people around here have gotten not friendlier, not nicer, but more honestly concerned when they ask you how you are and if you say you are ok considering, they look you right in the eye and say Yeah I know.
It’s weird but the people I see in my daily world are not people I picked out but people I’m on contact with and it’s like we’re all acknowledging our togetherness in our terror or something.
This is crazy but I’ve had more meaningful moments with the African Americans I see day to day than I ever have before. I didn’t expect that but something has made some people want to try harder? I don’t know. I am full of despair and yet I’ve had some of the most loving, surprising encounters with people I don’t know well I have ever had. This must be how it was for the people in London during the Blitz. hahahahahahahaha

Thoughtful people understand. They get it. Even when we tacitly agree not to talk about it. But Jerry Brown just said if Trump shuts down the satellites California will “launch its own damn satellite” to keep climate science going. We’re going to fight this. So that’s the forth to the back. I’ve had this conversation many times, as have others. You have to understand, Trump is mentally ill in a way that’s incomprehensibly dangerous for the world and civilization. We don’t know, but it’s possible we’re the only intelligent life, the only life capable of sustainable, meaningful intellectual activity, in the entire universe. It’s important that we survive. With Pence as President we’re more likely, as a species, to survive. With Trump, less so. You have to grasp this fact. It’s kind of important.

I am also a believer in the idea that most of his drama so far seems to be self-cancelling at least as far as Capital Hill goes. Congress has its own institutional perogatives to protect.

Not to belabor my own obvious point but there are basically no restraints I know of on a President’s decision to launch nuclear weapons. The Secretary of Defense has to verify the decision but can’t veto it. I say again, Trump is severely mentally ill in a way Pence isn’t.
