Discussion: Trump's FBI Nominee Chris Wray Pledges Independence From Trump

Gee, what a high-bar to set.

Why not arrest him if he orders you to do something illegal?

Wrayā€™s law firm represents companies with Russian oil interests. Because of course they do.

Sweet Blessed Baby Jesus of Saint Petersburg, is there anyone connected to Trump in any way who DOESNā€™T represent Russian oil and finance interests?

Rhetorical question, I assume?

Uh-huh. Like Roberts calling balls and strikes?

Republicans lie their ass off in confirmation hearings, and anyone nominated by lying Trump is at least 4 times more likely than the standard Republican to be lying.

His answers are weasel words. He wonā€™t even say that what Don Jr. did (which he also claims he knows nothing about) wasnā€™t necessarily wrong and he would advise anyone getting such an offer from Russia should get legal advice.

Lindsey Grahm had to feed him the question 3 different ways about notifying the FBI before he would agree.

Weasel. He reminds me of Gorsuch.

Yes, and Iā€™ll bet that fact about his firms legal ties to those two huge Russian gas companies doesnā€™t even come up at the hearing. Gonna be Ruskies every damn where.

For us, yes ā€“ but I hope one of the Dems on the committee brings it up. What a great torpedo to fire, even if it doesnā€™t sink Wray ā€“ it hammers home the point that once again, as always, yet ANOTHER Trump nominee has been pushing Russian interests.

ā€œI would try to talk him out of it, and if that failed, I would resign.ā€

It shouldnā€™t have been a difficult decision not to accept the nomination in the first place.

Fuck him.

ā€œGentlemen, I can assure you that the only contact with the White House will be between my mouth and Donald Trumpā€™s dick.ā€

What Wray said: Iā€™ll resign if Trump asks me to do anything illegal.
What Wray didnā€™t say: However, nothing the President does, by virtue of the office, is illegal. Make America Great Again!

No Democrat should vote to confirm Wray. He is the nominee of an illegitimate ā€œpresidentā€, and no one can believe a word he says.

Yeah, this guy looks like a fucking scumbag. Oh, and then thereā€™s this:

EVERY SINGLE appointment by this illegitimate ā€œpredisentā€ is fruit of the poisonous tree. Itā€™s like someone happy to report on his resume that he was proudly nominated and served under a pedophile who was an otherwise okay guy.

This is laughable. Gorsuch promised all sorts of crap and look what heā€™s done already. This guy is a liar. Heā€™s in deep with Russian Oligarchs and will kiss the ring. Sadly, he will likely get the vote. Iā€™m fed up with the lot of them.

And just who is it that will determine whatā€™s illegal or not?

I think we all know exactly how valid any promises made by any of Trumpā€™s nominees are; i.e., not at all. Of course heā€™s going to say what he thinks the committee wants to hear, and the Republican quislings will ram this nomination through. Same story, different day.

When I was in the Army I had to sign an NDA in the wake of Puzzle Palace. These NDAs included a clause that we could not sign NDAs. Author James Bamford had his sources sign NDAs so the Feds could not implicate him.

More importantly, Wray was a private citizen when approached by Trump and not encumbered by the restrictions you mentioned. Happy Hump Day.

Am I the only one alarmed that his first response to a request to do something illegal is ā€œtry to talk him out of itā€? Thatā€™s justā€¦well, for one, thatā€™s not your job. Second, even if you do ā€œtalk him out of itā€ heā€™ll just go lean on someone else, so it solves nothing. And third, justā€¦wtf?

I guess the real shame is the head of the FBI has no other tools at his disposal like an entire law enforcement agency charged w investigating just these kinds of crimes!

Hey, wait a minuteā€¦

I caught a bit of this on NPR a few days ago. Not sure of the details other than what is presented here.

"In our torture database, which we created through documents we received under the Freedom of Information Act, Chris Wray is named on 29 documents," Cole said. "And these are all documents related to the Bush administrationā€™s use of torture and coercive interrogation tactics against detainees."

Cole said Wray got notice about mistreatment of detainees, and at least one death. But his responses were redacted. So itā€™s not clear what, if anything, he did.

Probably not just in looks either.

No, actually that was the lawyer Christie hired putatively on behalf of the state, Randy Mastro from Gibson Dunn & Crutchrr.
