Gee, you mean Congress would actually have to vote and pass legislation (and certain people and the NRA would know how they voted), and the President would have to sign and enact that legislation to take even this simple, obvious, pretty much ineffective and just-for-show step? Can’t shove it off on some agency and criticize the unfair over-regulation? Can’t pretend like you care and try to hide the fact that you still aren’t doing a damned thing?
For what it’s worth, I don’t think any substantive non-firearms legislation will be forthcoming, either. They got the big tax cut, they’re content to starve the ACA from within, and neither McConnell nor Ryan has meaningful proactive control of his caucus or his chamber.
Government in stasis.
Assault weapons are here to stay. Nothing is going to get rid of them. One thing that can be done more easily is make them less deadly. The .223 caliber shell is designed to cause massive injury to the body. Let those shells only be sold to the military or Law enforcement. Replace the civilian assault weapon ammo with a less deadly round. That would curb sales of assault weapons also. It would just be a glorified, expensive twenty two shell without the tumbling in the body and the high FPS speed. No reason for the public to have those kind of shells. Assault weapon shells are used in varmint hunting. Generally speaking, one only has a chance for a single shot at a time with varmints. A bolt action in a different caliber would suffice.
If there is a distinction between gen z, the post-Millennial generation, and others, it is that they face more lethality than every previous generation that ever existed. And they fact a more vidistically distracted population than ever before.
The good news is that changing demographics mean that violence per se is declining, and there is at least some awareness of the depressing dangers of getting sucked into the diddly-diddly world.
I knew one devout NRA member. He told me that the NRA regards ANY efforts to control guns, ammo, etc as a foot in the door towards – tah-DAH! Confiscation of all our guns! Mama Mia!
I’ve mentioned before that way back in 1985 when I used to go to TX on business, they told me that the gubmint was going to make an effort to seize their guns now any day. Saint Ronnie was president then. These idiots believe this.
I’m told this came from “The Turner Dairies” or some shit.
Nice bit of support there. Hope they do more.

.@MLB: All 30 Major League teams will wear Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School baseball caps before their Spring Training games this weekend to show support for the Parkland, Fla., community and the Stoneman Douglas student body after the tragic shooting at the school on Feb. 14
ATF regulates silencers, an accessory. Why not bump-fire accessories?
Probably rhetorical but…
It was always intended as a diversion. Everything in this article was already known but it’s a level of detail difficult to track for newsmakers. We all know this drill, republicans do this all the time, they know the first reports will be about GOP ‘making an effort’ and end with ‘congress’ did nothing. Ya know, ‘both sides’ except now that includes *rump & Congress as well as D & R.
ETA: bump stocks aren’t sold by any of the major gun manufacturers. another detail that doesn’t get reported on as *rump gets recognition for this hollow gesture.
Side note: saw a school on news with high tech protections (cameras, devices like fire sprinklers but smoke to confuse shooter…), $400k in a school. This is where *rump is gonna take this. I’d bet $ he’s meeting with people right now to see how he can make millions (or more likely billions) off this. I bet Betsy’s brother will be willing to give a generous discount to militarize our schools. The gun manufacturers will donate guns to teachers…

Unfortunately, for every positive reaction, we get the opposite.
“Respect yourself, your fellow students and the Needville Independent School District and please understand that we are here for an education and not a political protest,” the statement said.
The kids are getting an education, you stupid man. Why are you standing in their way?
“They may come for our bump stocks but we’ll be waiting with our Gat cranks.”

If you vote no on gun control on assault weapons large capacity magazines and Bundt stocks and a background check on gun purchases if there’s another mass murder you are right there with a shooter pulling the trigger. If you as an elected official in Washington do not put some deterrence into law to keep assault weapons and guns out of the hands The mentally ill you are right there with him you are part of the problem and not the solutions. So I would suggest that you take the green back blinders off your eyeballs and take a look turn around and look at that seat you call your job description because it’s only a matter time that your butt won’t be sitting there all these young people students are just around the corner from voting age as mayor fact they should be able to vote now 30 damn smart I think your 1/3 away from being kicked out of office because you were deplorable .
Last time he had a summit, on immigration, he kept agreeing with the last thing said. But then the GOP came in, offered corrections, and by the time it was over, nothing had been accomplished.
Inspiring to see Trump really putting his back into this, amirite? Btw am I the only one who wonders how many doses of Prozac it takes for Trump to produce a reasonable facsimile of empathy while reading words written by others?
Let’s face it. Congressmen are more afraid of the NRA than they are of getting shot. (See Scalise, Steve)
He hobbles back onto the floor after months in the hospital and crippled from the wounds, and his colleagues applaud and hug him…and then do nothing.
Sickening!
“Bundt stocks”? First our guns and then our cakes?
/s
The letter details the logistical problems with applying the law to bump-fire stocks, which seem expressly designed to skirt prohibitions on machine guns.
Are you talking about the bump stocks or the law? I believe both of them perform exactly the same for different reasons.
So we can’t regulate our militias in any way. I wish someone would rid us of the remaining text of the meddlesome 2nd amendment.
It would be a sweet irony if after 8 years of “Obama’s going to take our guns!” if Trump and a GOP Congress were somehow forced to sign ANY gun legislation. Not worth the price maybe, but
maybe just to see some apoplectic gun nut carrying on about it.
Just like his disgraceful term in office…doomed.
Trump doesn’t give a crap about guns one way or another. If you could guarantee him the adoration of the media and the Hollywood crowd (whose approval he craves) without the blowback from his electoral base, he will call for the ban of anything deadlier than a slingshot.
As it is, he will have to stick to the NRA lines and keep and resign himself to only having the adulation of the deplorables.
