Discussion: Trump's Budget Would Balloon Deficit, Slash Social Safety Net

When you consider the human consequences of implementing any of these policies, it’s sickening. The proposals themselves play to the worst of human nature. Almost everyone has wondered how many people who are on SS Disability are actually unable to work, how much big agriculture makes from crop supports, or how much graft there might be in any number of programs. But we also recognize that macro-level policies are poorly suited to ensure that only the “deserving” reap the benefits. You can only imagine the people who would be removed from the SS Disability program, so that average of $1,171 could go toward tax cuts for those who are already cleaning up. No one wants waste but anyone who has watched this show before can tell you that waste and fraud are much more likely to win the survival game than others are. It’s like the “crash diets” that we used to talk about; the body is designed to protect its fat. So is the body politic.

Trump said:

“We’re going to have the strongest military we’ve ever had, by far,”

Proving once again that the trump administration is for the 1%. Perhaps he can explain just how this military might is necessary to protect the 99% of us who live in the US which has oceans on either side, and sits between Mexico and Canada… Which of those 2 is likely to attack first? All of this military money primarily benefits the corporations who make the stuff and the multinational corporations that work in sensitive areas of the world. I’ll give trump his border walls, if he cuts military spending by say 25%… this would let us concentrate the rest of our military on the threat from Canada

Yes, only when the poor and the proles realize who their victimizers are will they rise up, vote, and install a new victimizer in office.

Supper!

If you have goons going around threatening shopkeepers with violence unless they pay up you get better results when they can flash a gun in their face while demanding the loot.

In the past when wars ended the American government immediately cut the military. After the cold war ended the American government grew the military. We became planetary policeman and spent our hard earned treasure everywhere as our adversaries and friends cut their military budgets dramatically. Today they all have nice things, but we are stuck with a bunch of useless military hardware and a military budget that would only make sense in the event of a world war. I say enough of this shit. If the countryless rich truly want to police the world they can spend their own damn money. Leave America alone.

When I woke up and saw the headlines that Reagan, Bush, Bush2, and Trump had been elected, my reaction was the same: We are fucked. And sure enough we were. It was not the deficit spending so much as the waste of that money that hurt us. & here we are 37 years later still hearing that trickle down will work.

As a personal note, when I saw that Reagan had won I naturally assumed I had been abducted by aliens and taken to an alternate universe. It’s not a bad working hypothesis.

What I don’t get is his talk of a gutted military. We spend multiple times, the total of all other countries on our military. How can it be gutted?

It gets gutted by war profiteers. They get the cash, we get million dollar toilet seats and electrocution showers.

I can’t help but think he’s moved up on the list of most Punchable Faces quickly gaining on Martin Shkreli

It “makes sense” to its proponents — but not necessarily for the reasons they give.

Anyhow, as the AP notes:

If enacted as proposed, though no presidential budget ever is, the plan would […]

White House budgets don’t do particularly well in election years. This one may be an exception, but I doubt it.

I know that part…but how why is his lie allowed to stand. Wanting an efficient military does not mean you intend to harm it. Oy

so you are suggesting that for some reason, THIS does not bear repeating exhaustively?

“The open embrace of red ink is a remarkable public reversal for Trump and his party, which spent years objecting to President Barack Obama’s increased spending during the depths of the Great Recession.”

This is just normal journalism, why are there so many complainers here today, what makes this stuff somehow worthy of so much criticism?

Seriously, trivializing the daily news just because it is out there circulating seems, at best, insensitive and at worst distractive.

I rarely note typos in comments, but “thread” and “threat” are almost interchangeable these days, and thus your comment requires disambiguation with that simple correction.

Almost made sense, just long enough for the compulsive proofreader in me to miss it…
