Discussion: Trump's Ballyhooed Immigration Speech Was Nothing New, Folks

Donald Trump: The Will to Cower.

Say what you like about Leni Reifenstahl, but the original version of Trump’s speech had much better editing and composition:

Agree. Although you might want to check out this podcast from Planet Money on the roll-out of the smart gun: http://www.npr.org/sections/money/2016/04/08/473581490/episode-694-the-gun-that-wouldnt-shoot

At least Zombie Trump will keep the brains running on time.

Giving the speech in Phoenix, might have cost Tramp Arizona, a state he might have easily won. I think that voters should closely at getting rid of McCain as well.

He’s turned the Brexit up to 11

Quite honestly Trump would probably welcome this.

FRAUD…white man speaks with forked tongue…out both sides of his mouth.

The only truth that rings true about this HACK is that he’s a FASCIST.

The speech seemed to me to be the same demagoguery he has been delivering for a year, but somewhat more coherent. It is still irrational, but it brings out the fear he is encouraging to a much greater extent.

I avoid allusions to Nazis, but it’s hard not to draw analogies to Nazi newsreels of Hitler denouncing the Jews as some form of lowlife. Tonight, Rachel did a nice job of drawing a parallel with the hatred of Catholics in our 19th C.
Textbook demogogy of the worst kind: Displacement of anger over jobs and other societal and economic ills on to some group that is relatively defenseless.

The shouting, the hand gestures? Thank Godwin trump doesn’t have a toothbrush mustache.

That was horrible. Ideological certification? That sounds an awful lot like some kind of racial purity test.

Why doesn’t he just skip all the foreplay and start talking about rounding up anyone who doesn’t fit his description of whatever he thinks makes America great? Will the Jews, the Latinos, the Blacks the feminists and probably the gays be herded together or will he have separate (but equal) facilities?

Many people say that he plagiarized the speech … it was better in the original Deutsch.

Thanks for this. The NRA’s bullying of S&W is the example of NRA overreach to which I refer. PBS described it here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=935tqYT0XG0

The technology has come a long way in the last 16 years. The misfire rate of the Armatix and other Smart guns is now similar to that of conventional firearms. As the CEO of S&W said two decades ago: “If we can put a man on the moon, we can build a gun that will not fire in a child’s hand.”

The problem now is not the technology, but the NRA and extremists who fear if any one manufacturer builds a child proof or other safer gun, than government regulation will compel all to do it as they should. Mind boggling to me that the NRA leadership and GOP congressional majority have become so morally bereft that they justify the loss of thousands of children’s and other lives as an acceptable trade off for avoiding government safety mandates.

“As democracy is perfected, the office of the president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”
H.L.Mencken, 7/26/1920

Much as I hope that the sage of Baltimore is wrong, I have to recognize that we (the reality-based community) are in bit of a pickle. HO is deporting 2 million people during his first HOUR in office, which is interesting since that particular hour is usually spent getting back to the White House and figuring out where the staff has put the clothes you need for that night’s parties. During that same hour he is going to outfox ISIL, cure cancer, resolve the leg before wicket controversy, and declare our independence from Freedonia.

Meanwhile that incredibly well-prepared, intelligent, and constructive “gal” gets to be followed by ‘shadows and clouds’ because, well gee, we here at the NYT, WaPo, CBS, ABC, even whatever, just really don’t like her. Frankly, if you vote for a president because you do or do not “like” her or him, I’ve got a nifty portfolio of investment opportunities you should definitely call me about - bear in mind, the phone number is Jamaican and will be even more expensive than calling Trump.

Really an amazing photo. He’s thinking, “I wish I could crawl into a hole in the ground, this is so embarrassing. He’s touching my back, shepherding me around like his bitch. This is it, the end of my political career.”

I just read Josh Marshall’s ‘Blood and Race and Trump’ and saw that he had the same thoughts.

The best living politician to compare Trump to is Victor Orban. The Jobbik (Movement for a Better Hungary) Party came out of failed (and tiresome) Austerity policies (the Hungarians, like the Irish, Greeks, Latvians and other EU periphery states, piled on euro-debt once they had access to what seemed to be “cheap” money). This gave rise to a class of politicians that lectured the lower middle class on the evils of debt that sounded like nonsense. So along comes a party that blames a) immigrants 2) radical Islam and c) the bureaucracy in Brussels. Winning!

Victor Orban, a self-professed Trump lover. The Movement to Make America Great Again is really just American Jobbik.
