Donnie: Sure I groped broads…
Bar Barr!
“They’ll let you do anything if you’re President. Anything.”
The Constitution, he observed in one 1992 speech, created a “strong, unitary executive with veto power” and called it “grade school” analysis to suggest the Founding Fathers were primarily concerned with presidential overreach.
“Unitary Executive” means one president at a time. Hamilton argued for it because there was discussion of a shared presidency with 2 or 3 members. Republicans have been trying to turn the phrase into something that implies a president with unlimited power. This was clearly not what the founders intended, despite whatever NRA bullet wrapper Barr may have gotten the idea from.
At any rate, based on current evidence, we should be concerned with presidential overreach regardless of anyone’s previous views.
Well, I’m sure the president can do a lot of things. He or she just needs to be prepared to go jail for doing some of them.
Another Walmart special law degree…
He sure can pick 'em.
And the worst part is, this guy actually is licensed to practice law in this country. Good Lord…
“unsolicited memo Barr sent the Justice Department last year a”
JOB APPLICATION
FIFY
Are you sure he did not say “Authority over Broads”?
That would seal the deal for any Trump appointed AG…
Maybe I’m being naive, but I’m not as concerned about Barr, despite his maximalist views on Presidential power as some.
First of all, because it’s getting a little late in the day to shut down or significantly interfere with Mueller’s investigation. The public has read enough tea leaves to know several felonies have been committed by the Trump campaign, and even Trump himself. They won’t be able to easily explain away shutting down the investigation at this point. Secondly, the Democratic House will run a fair but aggressive investigation on multiple fronts that will be made public and can’t be shutdown by the AG. Thirdly, the Courts have, it seems, always ruled in favor of Mueller’s position whenever there’s been a dispute, and even by Trump appointed judges! Mueller’s team is supremely competent and up to almost anything Trump and Guliani can throw at them. And fourth of all, Barr may not be the rubber stamp Trump is counting on. He’s not a young man with bones to make, so to speak. He’s done this before and can easily find another job if fired. On this last count, I guess we’ll see.
Just what we need: An AG channeling Cheney and Bannon on the expanding breadth of executive powers. It fits all too well with Trump’s belief that as President he gets to do whatever he wants. Those with an actual understanding of how government is intended to work and how it generally has worked are scarce if not completely missing from Trump’s circle now. It’s scary.
Going on record as stating that none of us needs to learn much about this guy; he will prove to be too compromised to be confirmed and at any rate, Congress will be too busy with the tidal wave of crap about to hit the fan. Facts under consideration: 80/90’s relic + promulgating fictional constitutional law + tRrumpp choose him + he does not see the AG’s office as a place where careers go to die= no need to order biz cards, update LinkedIn, Facebook…
Why, oh why, does TPM continue to use this decades old photo of Barr? Better no photo at all, really, or at least put a caption with a date.
Yeah, he’s got that “growth” on the side of his face? neck? now.
Same glasses though.
Binders full of broads…
Great. Another monarchist.
Whatever ideas William Barr has and as corruptible as he may be, the real reason to reject Barr’s nomination is because he is terminally stupid, who the freak wants to be AG in Trump’s presidency? Not even Uber-moron Whitaker wants it anymore. Yeah, I know is a Catch-22 situation, the simple fact that anyone would want the job, disqualifies him.
Absolutely! We have only to look at W’s overreach, abetted by Cheney who was a solid advocate for the so-called “Unitary Executive,” and the illegal decisions regarding torture, launching war against Iraq, CIA rendition, etc. “Unitary Executive” as Barr, Bush, Cheney and other neocons argue it is simply a whitewashed allusion to King, Dictator, Emperor, etc. This was most definitely NOT in the minds of the Framers.
In no way should Barr be confirmed.
Perhaps a senator could ask him what he believes “unitary” means, and how it squares with Hamilton’s description.
