“Many people don’t know this, but Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States.”
Orange Julius:
I lived in Puerto Rico for years. Please stay the hell away- they have enough problems right now without your anticipated venom and off-topic rants and railing, lashes and put-downs and your incessant marveling at your ‘crowd’ size.
Seriously. You just make everything worse. Go work on Limbaugh’s roof repairs.
Another privileged glimpse of the bleedin’ obvious by our oblivious ‘leader’.
Stay away from Puerto Rico, Trump- you’ll just make it worse.
From the Washington Post:
Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló is warning that his government needs broader assistance from the federal government, calling on the Pentagon especially to provide more aid for law enforcement and transportation.
Rosselló said he’s also worried that Congress will shortchange his island once the initial wave of emergency relief is gone.
"We still need some more help. This is clearly a critical disaster in Puerto Rico,” he said.
From Attorney General Jeff Sessions:
“I really am amazed that a
judgegovernor sitting on an island in thePacificCaribbean canissue an order that stopsrequest help from the president of the United States.”
I suspect he already has. Pennsylvania has had severe budget problems in recent years. If we had a natural disaster and Trump went on about it before deigning to visit, people would be pretty ticked. I can’t imagine they’d feel different in Puerto Rico. My own Puerto Rican acquaintances and friends weren’t big fans before this anyway.
“The difference is this is an island sitting in the middle of an ocean and it’s a big ocean, it’s a very big ocean,” Trump said
Maybe some of your “very best” people can figure out a way of getting from here to there without crossing the whole fucking ocean.
that island was hit as hard as you can hit
Translation: I ought to be able to find some desperate sellers and get a great price on land for a golf course
Not gonna happen. That would require navigation, which involves fake science-y stuff.
And while you’re down there, be sure to use the phrase, “Heckava job”. They’ll love it!
Dotard is expert at changing the subject, especially when yet another scandal is about to surface. Other times he will ignore things … lest it expose yet another scandal.
I think we now know why Comrade Cockholster was loath to say anything about Puerto Rico. He no doubt was afraid it might call attention to yet another chapter in his never-ending wake of bankruptcies — stiffing Puerto Rico for nearly $33 million!
Trump International Golf Club Puerto Rico, which, according to Fortune, borrowed $26.4 million in government-backed bonds in order to pay for improvements, but later defaulted on a $119,814 to bondholders. In 2015, the club filed for bankruptcy, which is when Trump (who licensed his name to the property) desperately tried to distance himself from the place bearing his unbearable name.
Trump, according to BuzzFeed News, did pocket the hundreds of thousands of dollars in fees from the resort, and when the club defaulted on those bonds and declared bankruptcy, left Puerto Rico’s taxpayers with a hefty $32.7 million bill to pay in order to clean up the soon-to-be-president’s mess.
Actually, a correction here—and one that is not at all surprising, thank dog: The joint Navy/Marine/Army relief force working in the Virgin Islands has also begun relief efforts in Puerto Rico. Most of their early work looks like it’s in the manpower area (clearing roads etc), but they’re getting the airports up and running in St. Thomas and St. Croix, and providing additional supplies and capabilities, including bringing in generators and fuel for critical facilities (ie: hospitals etc) on all of the islands that were hit.
Full story here: https://news.usni.org/2017/09/25/navy-marine-corps-providing-around-clock-hurricane-maria-relief including a shot of the Army’s 602nd Area Support Medical Company leaving Kearsarge. So while the President hasn’t exactly marshaled a massive effort (yet? I hope?), the servicemen and women we have down there are doing exactly what they should be.
Like I said when we first heard about Abraham Lincoln’s group going south: this is why we really have these things. Also, for @tiowally: Normally, the hospital ship USNS Comfort would be involved, but (mentioned in the comments, and confirmed by checking the navaltoday.com story on the contract) she’s been up in Boston in drydock for much of the spring/early summer and is probably still finishing up her qualification trials before returning to active service.
While I’d love to see more info being presented by the WH/Pentagon that the armed forces are out there in PR, what I’d like to see even more is more damned ships in motion. And hopefully, we’ll get that soon. Bataan’s Amphibious Ready Group got back into Norfolk on the 22nd after a 7-month deployment, and while I certainly understand those sailors and Marines wanting to get some time with their families, 10-day turn around to resupply and get steaming isn’t unreasonable in a crisis. If so, that’ll bring Bataan (LHD-5), Mesa Verde (LPD-19), and Carter Hall (LSD-50), into the picture as well.
So, I’m glad my original irritation is less warranted than I’d thought, and I hope the USN sends the second ARG down soon.
It now appears the USNS Comfort will be on its way shortly.
Which Puerto Rico is he headed for? The one in the Atlantic or the one in the Caribbean?
Excellent news!
President Donald Trump says he’ll visit Puerto Rico next Tuesday to sell caps for $20 each .
