Discussion: Trump To Boost GOP Bill Limiting Legal Immigration

Iā€™d like to make a suggestion to TPM: In any piece about proposed legislation, can you please note how many votes are needed to pass the bill? Maybe that isnā€™t possible until itā€™s been scored by the CBO. I just think it would be nice to know if it even stands a chance of getting through the Senate.

Letā€™s keep this a white manā€™s country, he-ah?

Both Purdue and Cotton would be pleased to admit scads of immigrants if they were granted a special ā€œslaveā€ designationā€¦

Would Trumpā€™s wife Melania have qualified under this proposed criteria? Her language skills are questionable. She was employed in a industry, fashion that did not need more employees. Iā€™m sure we have plenty of fashion models both native and foreign born. Plus she had a child with a learning disability that is a burden to the system and taking away special needs funds from other deserving children.

Mr. Mail Order Bride #3 wants to make immigration more difficult? You canā€™t make this up, I dare you to even try. And the GOP/conservatives/ā€˜Christiansā€™ support this clown!

Trump says the measure would make the system more ā€œmerit basedā€ for skilled English speakers. He says it would keep out people who will just end up collecting welfare. He provided no information to support his statement.

This reeks of corruption. Gee, what a surprise.

I too wondered if Melania would qualify. I think the bill would require 60 votes to end debate. Listening to talk about the bill I was struck by the way the Nasturtium Narcissist said ā€œpeople who speak Englissshhhhā€ in a tone dripping with disgust for those who speak other languages (which if you ask me there is a greater need for in this country).

None of those details matter. She qualifies in the most important skill. The right color of her skin.

As usual with this president. When you cannot get anything done, feed your racist base so that they in turn continue to hold the party hostage to your corrupt incompetence and madness.

What on earth could this be? To get my L1 visa I had to show English proficiency (helpfully, Iā€™m English), a large-ish wage and my firm had to explain that I was the only one who could do the job.

Who actually comes legally to the US and gets ā€œwelfareā€? What welfare is there to get?

People once were welcome here.

To answer your question, certain Iraqi and Afghan immigrants can draw SSI right away. Any other lawful immigrant must be in the USA at least 5 years. Medicaid and CHIP require 5 years.

Trump has a 35 plus year history of gaming the immigration system for his own nefarious benefit. He hired 200 Polish undocumented to demolish Burgdoff when he constructed Trump Tower. He treated them in a abhorrent manner forcing them to do demolition work without protective gear.
Add to that the yearly Mar a Lago H1-B visas for hotel and restaurant workers when there are available workers in Florida to take those jobs. As verifiable by a local Palm Beach employment agency.

The legislation is sponsored by Republican Sens. David Purdue of Georgia and Tom Cotton at Arkansas.

Nothing says ā€œgood, devout Christianā€ like this legislation.
