Discussion: Trump Tells GOP To Pass His Immigration Plan As Some Push For A Narrower Bill

“He’s the President. You’re not going to get a law without his signature,” he said. “We can’t exactly ignore him.

You ignored him all last year, including the negotiations for the ACA repeal bill and the tax cut bill. Why is that not feasible now?

“If you deal with the illegal immigration problem, you have to deal with the legal immigration problem as well.

Why? It’s a simple question that, alas, too few in our news media will ask. They have nothing at all to do with one another. Not only is there no particular reason to link them, there are very good reasons not to do so, starting with the simple fact that if you link them, you will get nothing. Which, come to think of it, is likely the intent.

“Justice Department - investigate my enemies, ignore me and my friends. Congress - pass this law I wrote, don’t send me this other law. Everybody - here’s another Executive Order.”

How’s that strict constitutionalism working out for ya, Republicans?

Trump is playing hardball but he always backs down. The Trump GOP Congress know full well that Trump wouldn’t veto anything they pass. The GOP House under Trump lackey Ryan won’t even put a clean DACA bill up for a vote out of fear it’ll pass. If Ryan actually wanted to help Dreamers — which he doesn’t — he’d support a narrowly tailored “clean” bill and ask the Senate to pass it. Trump would sign it and claim all the credit. Ryan, however, lacks any courage (or worse, is a racist like Trump) and won’t do it.

This is like watching the Trolls debate how to cook up the hobbits. Lets hope 2018 provides even a little bit of sunlight.

And meanwhile, back at the ranch – the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau continues have it’s enforcement gutted.

"You’re not going to get a law without his signature,”

Another GOP Constitutional scholar, and a member of the Legislative branch no less, puts on public display his ignorance of Article 1, §7 which gives the Legislative branch the express power to “get a law without his signature.”

Coequal only because they choose to be. A super majority congress can do absolutely anything short of amending the constitution all by its damn self.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) told reporters “He’s the President.
You’re not going to get a law without his signature,” he said.
          “We can’t exactly ignore him.”

As in … a case of flesh eating bacteria …

I hereby nominate John for the fucking ’ understatement ’ award of the century ! —

The sad thing is Trump not only loves hearing this shit he believes it!

There won’t be a deal on immigration. Trump wants to deport. The word ‘dreamers’ clearly creates a visceral reaction in him because in his racist mind it elevates the standing of POC immigrants who believe in the American ideal more fervently than many native born. Trump is the first white President and unlike prior racist Presidents, Trump acutely feels that any concession to POCs means whites will be overrun because of his perception of the impact of demographic change in this country.

We may as well cancel the tax cuts for businesses. There aren’t going to be enough workers to fill all the jobs that new jobs that the GOP used as justification for the cuts.

Yes but I think something reasonable will pass in the Senate but the House will kill it. Wish they’d all do a bit of family research on themselves -chain migration is how and why many of us are here. The lottery continues to be mischaracterized. Our local TV station did a profile of someone who used the lottery to immigrate. She is from Iceland and is a researcher. It took her years to get permanent residency.

Cornyn is scum. He is apparently unaware of the veto power, or maybe he’s just a fucking rubber-stamp traitor.

I do see some hope for what you say. I actually do believe that about half of the GOP caucus wants to get something done, but Trump/Kelly/Miller are basically wearing Klan hoods in the WH.

The Koch brothers also hate Trump’s immigration plan. Their support for the GOP is actually quite limited to tax cuts, and perhaps judges, but after listening to a Koch meeting, it’s really about tax cuts/deregulation. I can see the Kochs making their move now to lock in money to support the GOP on tax cuts/deregulation, kill Trump’s immigration plan, and perhaps force more cuts in a gov’t shutdown. However, part of me thinks that the Kochs understand that they need a good economy to have a shot in '18 and they may overrule Trump/WH altogether and push a deal with Dems on everything in order to lock in the tax cuts as the primary issue and shove Trump’s distractions to the side.

The specter of Dreamers being rounded up and deported may work for the base. I would think the Kochs would be in favor immigrant labor which tends to be cheaper.

But the optics of ICE dragging kindergarten teachers and health care workers out of their jobs into detention, may motivate the saner Reps in the GOP. It is a sliver of hope.

Further, it’s an oxymoron (sorry) to even imply that there is a problem with LEGAL immigration. Weird.

What ya going to do this time at the gov’t shutdown republicans?
Old pathetic man is baiting you in again and walking you right over the cliff.
No way with your best lies and misdirection are you going to pin it on the democrats this time around. Not that you succeeded last time.
Feels like the first time. lol only worse this time.

This battle was always going to happen, Trump thinks he has the upper hand but too many members of congress have to be concerned about this issue in an election year to just blindly follow him. He won’t be having another keg party on the south lawn. Months of fighting will make the issue a midterm concern.
