Discussion for article #246282

Dear Mr. Trump,
(in my best Alec Guinness voice) Rubio is the droid you are looking for!

“And it’s not Marco Rubio’s time, either, which is why I am going to crush that unctuous little motherfucker like the bug he is.”

In this race for president, it’s nobody in the GOP’s time.

“Trump On Jeb Dropping Out: He Fought Hard, But It Wasn’t His Time…and as The Donald passed behind Jebby, he suddenly grabbed the top of Jeb’s underpants and gave him one last Super Wedgie…just as a reminder of the campaign trail.”

That “wasn’t his time” stuff suggests Trump is measuring his destiny-laden self against the sweep of history. Reminds me of Gollum imagining himself stealing the ring back from Frodo and using it to defy Sauron and the Ringwraiths and become The Gollum, master of everything! SPOILER ALERT It didn’t work out that way, though.

"You know, four years ago. I think he would’ve won," Trump said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“Jeb fought very hard, it just wasn’t his time. That’s all,” he said. “He’s a very capable person.”

Uhhhhh

Are you sure?

The Bush brand is finally recognized as being as broadly toxic among Republicans as among Democrats. His electorate recognized that his only claim to the nomination was his entitlement to it. Maybe an explanation for the really terrible Jeb! campaign, starting the that very '!," was that his entitlement was not being delivered to him.

The Republican electorate itself dating all the way back to the 1960s having supported with increasing virulence the notion that governance across the federal system could be locked in the sealed box of the 1950s and unable to acknowledge or even recognize that its wounds are self-inflicted, has given up on the US constitutional democracy.

Consequences forthcoming…

That’s not what he tweeted immediately after Bush’s speech. He said something to the effect that Bush ran out of energy, etc., etc. etc

Believe it or not, Trump is talking out his butt here. People vote on persona, mostly, and Jeb’s was that of a student council president who wants to seem earnest and dedicated but is actually a smarmy, pandering little snot who’d do anything and sell anyone out to get to the head of the class. People like that sometimes do get elected student council president, because nobody else wants the job. Sometimes they get elected governor because they’ve checked all the relevant boxes. Relatively few get elected President. Bush was terrible at campaigning from the beginning to the end, and he never could come up with a rationale for his being President. Even in magnanimous victory, Trump’s full of it.

It’s bad form to piss on a fresh grave. This is one of the few instances where Trump obeys the protocols. Or at least he’s not pissing on it twice.

Trump, the adolescent candidate, is only rubbing salt into Jebra’s wounds, adding insult to injury. Very Trumpy.

I just keep shaking my head at this whole nightmare. I hear these people who support him and wonder how divorced from reality they must be to believe this billionaire businessman full of bluster and no substance will make a good president. Truly it must be that they want to win back the WH they are willing to believe anything.

This is more self serving nonsense from Trump. The Bush name is the political equivalent of a superfund site. Totally toxic. Bush never had a chance last time or this time.

Trump operates in the vacuum of a completely shallow republican talent pool.

He occasionally seems to have a vague, general idea of what’s the polite, gracious, and rational thing to do in a situation. He just hardly ever acts on it.

Riiiiiight. Four years closer to the disaster that was his brother’s legacy he could have done better. I think we all know where this is Trump-eting from…

Exactly. And he wants jebs voters. He wants to distance himself from the nutjobs he has been courting now that the real election is coming closer.

He might even start saying normal things to show that he ‘not Cruz’ crazy.

Yeah, same here. There’s been a sense of unreality about this from the start, like Trump’s supporters are watching Pro Wrestling and he is their favorite heel. I don’t know what happens when they realize that now it’s real.

I think Donny boy knows full well what is polite, gracious and rational, but that’s in another universe from the grifter character he’s created himself as in order to woo the low-hanging fruit of the GOP base. He knows what he’s doing, which is an expression of pure unadulterated demagoguery.

He may seem reasonable by patting Jeb! on the back, but really, it’s just calculated self-adulation.
