Ok, so he just gave himself an out. He can talk tough and look like a badass to his supporters, and then claim victory because of unspecified “betterness” of NAFTA after he’s done. Win/win.
How many people are familiar with the specifics of NAFTA? My guess us very few (and there is no way POTUS has read it, or even a brief of what it actually says).
My take on this is that cooler heads have shown him that a trade war will make America not great. He is giving himself an out—he’ll claim that he has negotiated much more favorable terms, even if there is no change at all. He can rest assured that even if anyone reads it, trade policy is far too complex for the average rube tp grasp.
This is how Trump ran his business and his life: it’s all he knows so that’s what he does. Full stop.
The markets are settling down. One might conclude that traders have figured out Trump is just shooting shit.
According to Mnuchin, new sanctions are supposed to be in play soon. Now he might have been scared sh—less, when revealing this time frame, but its a ‘win’, right?
With Dumpster in full Dumpster Fire Mode over various probes into his sundry scandals, I for one am relieved he hasn’t gone “Wag the Dog” in an actual shooting war.
Translation: we’re totally backing down on tariffs.
I know for a fact that nobody in the Trump administration saw past her ability to rock a red dress… but Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs is Chrystia Freeland. World class journalist and editor. Multi-lingual. Expert in Russian affairs (currently a target of Putin’s sanctions), foreign policy, economics, and international trade.
I feel like she might be able to identify President Boobygrabber’s bluff.
That’s the unfortunate part of all this - we’re all rooting against you guys now, to the point where we’re comparing trade envoys (and maybe finding a bit of relief in the fact that we have world-class experts going up against The Nepotism Nexus).
It’s not right. We’re allies. Fuck, we’re practically the same country.
He has no concept how trade agreements actually work. One of the major purposes of NAFTA is to prevent trade wars, and it contains legal dispute resolution mechanisms for enforcing its terms, both in disputes between states and investor-state disputes. Donny doesn’t seem to grasp that Canada and Mexico have legal recourse that can cost the US bigly.
Blatantly ignoring existing treaty obligations is what failing states like Venezuela, run by desperate and/or incompetent “leaders,” do. And now, the United States under the Trump regime.
Sad.
ABSURDITY ALERT:
“When a country (USA) is losing many billions of dollars on trade with virtually every country it does business with, trade wars are good, and easy to win,” Trump said in an early morning tweet on Friday.
Feature, not bug. Trump’s handler’s goal is to wedge us away from our allies.
Damn I’m glad you still feel that way. Thanks.
Weak tariffs! Sad!
No trade war, no trade war, you’re the trade war!
“Not that I’m aware of”
Now I know why she uses that clutch so much. It does come in handy.
This, a gazillion times over. Please someone make this an ad and run it nonstop, just so we can watch his head explode on live tv
I like the cut of your jib, arrendis

Wait, so this is now about Canada and Mexico?
I thought it was about China taking advantage of the US? I guess someone pointed out you can’t really punish a country by imposing a tax on a product where only 2% of your imports come from that country.
Also, wasn’t this tariff gonna be around for a “Long time”?
Also, wasn’t this all about building the US steel industry? So Mexico/Canada give a discount and the US doesn’t need a steel industry anymore?
Who the hell falls for this shit? It’s obvious as hell Trump was feeling pressure and needed to lash out. Someone suggested (probably Icahn) putting tariffs on steel, and he jumped on it. Now that others are pointing out how stupid an idea it is, he is simply waffling trying to make it look good.
The worst part are the idiots who are actually gonna fall for this, as they lose their jobs because the manufacturing industries which use steel get hit by these tariffs.
