So, the whole country is up in arms over his disgraceful violations of the constitution, but because it’s aggrieving everybody, it’s not a thing? Maybe these lawyers would be more successful writing for a late-night sketch comedy show.
Through dense legalese, they argue that the plaintiffs “are asserting only a generalized grievance shared by all members of the public.” That “grievance” supposedly stems from “having an official comply with constitutional provisions adopted for the benefit of the public generally.”
Again, I want to know who is PAYING for all of this invaluable legal help. If a normal person had this many lawsuits pending, they’d already be bankrupt.
Well, as @j.dave so nicely put it above, it looks like they expect the discovery process to expose clear evidence of Trump’s guilt. And that really will be irreparable.
Which most of us consider to be a feature, not a bug.
I was wondering the same thing… It seems to me that this action is targeting the person that is the President and not the Office of the President. It would be sweet irony if the DOJ lawyers’ motion was dismissed due to lack of standing.
The Washington and Jefferson exports and Obama book sales, looks like the type of arguments that would have been presented in the comments section of RedState.com, not by serious lawyers.
“President Trump’s Justice Department is scrambling to stop two state attorneys general from procuring evidence about whether the President is violating the Constitution’s emoluments clause. . .”
Since when has the DOJ become Trump’s personal law firm. The DOJ represents “We the People” not Benedict Donald.
“Several early Presidents owned plantations and continued to export cash crops overseas while in office, including Washington, who exported flour and cornmeal to ‘England, Portugal, and the island of Jamaica,’ and Thomas Jefferson, who exported tobacco to Great Britain,” the filing reads."
