Discussion: Trump Campaign Plans To Ramp Up Spending With $140 Million Fall Ad Buy

Why spend that amount on any ads from the Trump campaign? They’ll run an ad and as soon as it airs he’ll give a speech contradicting what the ad says. Too bad political speech is protected from false advertising laws.

“Fall” is the right word, because that is what will happen to his numbers as we get into debates, etc.

The donald took time from his busy schedule of stealing his foundation’s money and blowing Putin’s horse to tweet about his bigly ad spending plans.

Miller said upcoming national television ads would focus on Trump’s key campaign themes, such as the economy and law and order.

***Law and Order:*** Trump is saying middle class whites need to vote for him or they're eventually all be overrun and killed by black and brown people.

***Economy:*** Trump is telling middle class whites that Democrats at their death want to seize the huge estate they're eventually going to own. You know, just like the lottery they're going to win. Or the promotion to company President surely in their future. Or that bag of precious gems they're going to find abandoned in a park. Donald is going to make sure Albert and Gail down at the trailer park never fall victim to onerous estate tax confiscation of their life's earnings.

As I understand it, he’s paying a higher rate than Clinton because he waited. I wonder what the premium is.

I wonder if Cheeto Benito will start wearing his vintage Royal Italian Army uniform and a pair of aviator shades?

Two questions:
How will he profit from this? He doesn’t own the companies from whom they must buy the time. So far he has been able to profit from everything.
Do they have to pay in advance for the time? Because if he doesn’t get enough rubes’ donations to cover it, he’ll have to pay for it himself. That would be especially sweet if he loses. If he wins, no problem–he’ll sign an executive order that he doesn’t have to pay, and it’ll all be cool.

I just love that hand gesture. I bet his elbow is tucked into his ribs, the way he does. Reminds me of prissy old women who went to finishing school when they were young. "Would you like some cream with that tea, dear?

Trump is well versed in a third alternative.

The companies he chooses to produce the ads will be filled with the spirit of charity and make a generous contribution to the Trump Foundation. At least, once that meddling Farenthold kid stops writing about it.

Centralasiaexpat asks an important question. It would be helpful to know how much television time Trump’s money and Hillary’s will buy moving forward.

This is the first indication I’ve seen that the Trump campaign might be able to match Hillary’s on one important metric: money spent on advertising. In fact, it sounds as though he’s getting ready to outspend her. But it might be the case that she’ll be able to put up more advertising at lower cost.

My understanding is that for the over-the-air broadcast slots, the ad buys that are done directly by the campaign get (per law and/or FCC reg) the lowest commercially available rate. So, I don’t think he will actually have to pay more for broadcast slots. But, by coming to the party late his choices of time slots are much more limited.

For the Cable slots, I am not sure if the same regs apply as far as the ad rates. However, he will be running into the same scarcity of available time slots on the cable nets. It may be that in order to get the time slot he wants on a particular show that instead of being able to zero in on a particular state or region to get a good slot that he will actually have to buy national time in order to get his message out to Ohio and Pennsylvania (for instance).

I can’t find a substantive discussion of the demographics targeted by this most recent 140 million… but, if his buys are similar to the ones he made last month it looks to me like he is only running ads on the type of shows that he personally likes to watch. He does not appear to be targeting undecided voters.

But doesn’t that rate change as well? You couldn’t gouge a campaign by charging more than you would to Gary’s Discount Stereo, but if either Trump or Gary want to buy a last-minute ad in October 2016, supply and demand says they’ll each be paying more than they would in October 2015.

Trump's advertising plan costs more than his campaign has
in the bank, meaning he needs to dip into his own pockets
     or continue raising major money.

The campaign can say whatever it wants … But the money talks —

I doubt we’ll see a huge uptick … Skinflint won’t spend his own money —

Another thought… with his campaign only reporting 50 Million in the bank it may be difficult for him to find stations or networks that will agree to run the ads on net-30 terms. And, given his litigious history, his fondness for renegotiating debt and his willingness to deal off the bottom of the deck it is doubtful that even a Personal Guarantee will carry any weight. He will probably have to pay cash up front.

More likely, he’ll dip into the Trump Foundation’s pockets.

That’s interesting. I never knew that. Still, I wonder how networks define the “available” rate. I used to be an advertising manager. It wasn’t unusual during an election/olympics year for advertising inventory to sell out. I always put in an up-front buy in January and there were times when networks tried to buy inventory back from me come August/September. If Clinton’s campaign placed her media buys early enough, I would think that today’s “lowest commercially available rate” could still be higher than what she paid.

To counter this, Hillary should begin a daily news conference, call ins to all the talk shows, start drawing attention to herself with policy announcements and outlining the rights lies and hypocrisies over and over. In other words, free media.

Exactly. Think of it in terms of buying plane tickets. If you buy your ticket three months out, you’re going to get a much better price. If you wait until two weeks before your trip, you’re going to pay a whole helluva lot more. So, Trump will pay exponentially more than Clinton and get less.
