Nothing Trump does is good. What we’re seeing is that his theory that he could make decisions that would only hurt minorities and liberals and not everyone is total bs (‘hurt the people he’s supposed to be hurting’ as one FL Trumper put it). It’s why he lost the House last year and the majority of Senate races.
A lot of what Trump does is so stupid that it hurts him with his base. But he can’t help being stupid. It’s his essence.
For example, launching tariff wars as distractions or firing everyone and not replacing them w/competent folks are things that Trump was always inclined to do, but the fact that he does so under duress makes it harder for him to sell these policies and moves, exposes him as a fraud, and limits his ability to do worse things.
The truth is the turmoil he has created at DoD by firing Mattis (in response to Cohen pleading guilty (again) and Flynn getting flayed as a traitor in front of a federal judge) likely means that we’re not going to get into a major war with Iran because there is no one competent to execute such a policy (and Vlad won’t stand for something that destabilizing to an important ally). A worse scenario would’ve been like the Bush years where Bush and Cheney manipulated competent people to do terrible things.
Additionally, Trump always threatened a shut down of the gov’t. But his quixotic shutdown over the wall (again in response to Cohen/Flynn’s troubles in December) undermined him from the start, allowed Nancy to win a decisive victory and pretty much destroyed any chance of Trump having any impact on the budget that will pass this year and next.
So keep pressuring this weak POTUS and he’ll do stupid stuff that will lose him more support, make him less effective and easier to beat.
I’ve made this analogy in other threads, but it holds here too: in martial arts, they teach you to take the opponent out of their game. If they like to kick, go to the ground; if they like to circle, go right at them. But if they like to head-on attack (like Donnie)–then circle, confuse them, and counter.
So keep pressuring this weak POTUS and he’ll do stupid stuff that will lose him more support, make him less effective and easier to beat.
Oh, please. This is magical thinking. Whatever support Rump has is solid. Not going away anytime soon. This country’s had 2+ years of chaos and extreme corruption. If some people haven’t gotten it by now, they won’t. Impeachment isn’t some cure-all.
I agree about the Senate and that inquiries and/or proceedings will may cause some of his supporters in the Senate to lose in 2020. NC is a purple state and Tillis is already on shaky ground. He can’t turn on Trump, no matter how bad it gets, because a lot of his supporters will not vote for him and he will lose independents if he just sits on his hands. My guess is that he will cover his ears and go lalalalalalala for the next 17 months.
Schakowsky’s district is rated D+18 and she’s calling for an impeachment inquiry. On that, the issue is when not if. And I agree that the inquiry will put the already endangered Senators on even more shaky ground.
I invite you to look at the 2018 county results in the battleground states like PA, OH, WI, IA, MI and others. GOP lost more support in Trump counties than in blue ones. There’s a reason for that. Red county voters are souring on Trump to a level that even high base turnout couldn’t stop a Dem blue wave. Same trend will hold for 2020 if Dems get behind their nominee and focus on Trump by making his life miserable. An impeachment inquiry plays into that.

Recent interviews with some Rump supporters who are being hurt by whatever craziness he’s throwing at the country today show he still has their support. Now, I wouldn’t go so far as to say all 2016 Rump voters are still on board. But many are. I think an impeachment inquiry timed just right might depress their turnout
Trump can brag after the fact because it is now immaterial, but we know he was itching and tried to fire Mueller. The only reason he did not his own “Saturday Night Massacre” is because McGahn, who knew he would have gotten caught in the middle of it, refused to play ball.
Had Trump actually succeed om firing Mueller, he would not be around to brag about how he could’ve done it if we wanted to. He’d already been impeached and, possibly, convicted too as his support would have cratered after such a brazen act…
I’m pro-impeachment inquiry, because the rule of law must be enforced by the appropriate constitutional authority–the House. Also, it should happen right away, because otherwise 2020 will become an impeachment referendum, not a referendum on Trump’s presidency. Pelosi knows this–and it’s why her moves to delay matters must be understood as an attempt to undermine the prospect of impeachment, period.
The other big point in favor of impeachment that goes largely undiscussed is that Trump will not cooperate: he and the DOJ will actually direct any and all WH personnel, past and present, from appearing as witnesses, producing documents, etc. It will be the same situation as the current oversight fiasco. And–if Democrats show minimal grit and political skill–it will become obvious to Americans, even those unenthused by the idea of impeachment, that Trump basically feels that the power of impeachment no more applies to him than the power of oversight. That would be a big own goal with most folks.
The joker in the pack isn’t Trump, however. It’s the Democrats. My assessment is that they simply don’t have the basic political talent, never mind grit, to pull off an impeachment without shooting themselves in the foot. Trump will turn impeachment into a massive constitutional crisis, and there is a not-negligible chance that Democrats will blink and finally let the thing fizzle out in a procedural quagmire.
I’m also wondering if she’s waiting for early fall to get past the summer doldrums when people are on vacation and thinking of the beach. September seems the perfect time to capture national attention.
Hannity can’t get Donald to shut up in that clip and in this longer clip is just so full of bullshit. And Hannity has to remind Donald that he was spied on! And when Hannity asking him a question about it you can hear the hesitation of Donald mot knowing what the fuck Hannity is talking about and asking for! https://caching.grabien.com/c/streams/0636/LH_Jdwfwu0AuAwRtiZlG0w/1561080500/636997.mp4
We’re now up to 70 Dems who support an impeachment inquiry (71 w/Amash). Tony Cardenas (CA - San Fernando Valley) has declared in favor of an impeachment inquiry. I’d expect the rest of the So Cal reps (Hill, Bass, Gomez, Rouda, Cisneros, Levin) to declare as well over the next 30 days or so. I think once they get this min wage bill passed, you’ll see Dems get more aggressive on this.
