In my neck of the woods here in The South (Virginia), we say it a couple ways: 1) âWhy, bless his heart.â 2) âWhy, bless his little heart.â Either way can be taken as a sweet compliment, but #2 is usually meant as a verbal smack because of the added âlittle.â It really depends on the direction of the preceding conversation or topic, but the inflection used is the dead giveaway.
