So this is Trump’s “fire and fury?” This is why NK is taunting us. Trump “speaks harshly and carries a small stick (with small hands).”

To be fair, NK has been taunting the US for years, decades even. They were taunting before Trump discovered Twitter.

Oh, I agree, but NK has now ratcheted up their taunting (as well as their nuclear program) knowing that they are needling Trump, an insecure, ego driven goof ball. Frankly, it’s scary.

I think there’s more to it. U.S. economic sanctions on NK have largely been unilateral in practice (i.e., everyone else cheats), which makes them a bit of a joke. To have bite, they need to have global buy-in and they need to be enforced. The implied alternative here is not that Trump will pout, but that the U.S. will deploy force against NK – as in act of aggression. This is a hawkish, but not entirely unreasonable, demand. And the UN is exactly the right place to take this.

I’m holding my conclusions in abeyance right now. Nothing that was done in the past worked. Perhaps - and it’s a big perhaps - out-crazying their rhetoric will. It is at least possible that by making people think he’s crazier than Kim (“making them think” may be wrong…), he’ll have more success. I have no idea what will happen, but it might. And honestly, I personally would probably have nuked Pyongyang by now. You can’t threaten the US with nukes and get away with it, otherwise everyone else will do it and things will get even more dangerous.
