Who knows? The one thing we’ve learned these last twenty years is that an inherent part of the GOP’s descent from normal American political party to ethnic grievance-mongering hyper-nationalist authoritarian movement party is the withering of any conception of patriotism as a thing different from, and inferior to, party loyalty.
But where patriotism fails, the desire for self-preservation may prevail and writing a letter like this is the essential first step to trying to get the necessary Republican votes.
@ncsteve correctly identifies the first-step element of it. And I think he’d agree–if not, speak up!–that they have a bunker mentality, where they’re victims of the Other under attack from all sides. So some of them believe tht once they lose incumbency they may never be back. And they know no life except the grift/Uncle Sam dole. So there’s hope even before next year’s election.
Well, I suggest you start thinking a good thought that he be sent elseways 'cause wherever he ends up, the air will reek of Ivanka by Ivanka, the unsuccessful perfume line Donald will sell to Uncle Sam for 400 cents on the list-price dollar as one of the conditions of his vacating the Northern Mar-a-Lago.
I have to admit that I am looking forward to seeing someone putting Donny’s nuts in a vice and turning the crank. But the Republicans won’t let it happen so long as Donny allows them to charge to the right - even if that means all Donny’s promises to take care of the forgotten people turn out to have been written on toilet paper. That tells me that Donny is much more interested in hiding stuff than he is in getting re-elected. He needs the right to protect him, and he will let them roll us back to the days of Hoover to keep them on his side.
