Discussion for article #241990
Chairman Pitino’s er Gowdy’s credibility is at stake…
Hold on Mr. Schiff: I hardily disagree with your complain that the committee has become “little more than a partisan tool to influence the presidential race.” That’s just not true. It is only a partisan tool to influence the presidential race.
“That, I think, is going to be a matter of our discussion after the hearing this week: How much longer does it make sense for us to continue to participate?” Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) told Reuters in an interview published Tuesday.
“At the same time, you know, we lend legitimacy, by being there, to a committee that really has none,” he told Reuters.
Tough call. Do you abandon the committee and risk more propaganda in the future as Gowdy and his band of idiots release partial testimony, redacted emails, and other grossly dishonest “evidence” in order to slime Clinton? Or, do you stick around and continue giving this committee even a shred of credibility? I don’t trust the American people to be interested enough or smart enough to understand that the Democrats are walking away because it’s a farce. I fully expect the American people to think “theys just runnin’ away”, although some will get it. Tough call.
Hey, hey, hey…:::shakes fist::: Wait, just one damn minute! In a town that serves liquor until 4 am, where bourbon is literally on tap in some places and basketball players are gods, I remain unconvinced that anyone paid for sex. Strippers, yes. I believe that. But sex? No.
They shouldn’t quit until the final report is written so that they can make sure it is purged of bullshit. Or that there is no report issued at all and they just cross-reference the earlier report since no new actual facts have been “discovered.”
I don’t see how a childish stunt is going to fix a childish stunt. They should ride it to the end and it wouldn’t hurt if that got a bit more assertive. The GOP has a majority but that doesn’t come with duct tape and gags. The Democrats can object and use their time to allow witlessness’s to testify sans Gowdy’s courtroom leadings and theatrics. Quit is quit and it’s not a word the Democrats need be associated with. The press will murder them if they do it. They never should have mentioned it.
Democrats may resign from House Select Committee on Benghazi after
Hillary Clinton testifies Thursday at a high-profile public hearing,
according to a top Democrat on the panel.
“That, I think, is going to be a matter of our discussion after the
hearing this week: How much longer does it make sense for us to continue
to participate?” Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) told Reuters in an interview published Tuesday.
Nit-picky, I suppose, but how is Schiff a top democrat on the panel? Cummings is the ranking dem member. Is there some sort of ranking for the members who are not either the chair or ranking member?
Its getting to be an easier call, however. Which is why these discussions are starting. They have been massively exposed as a partisan witchhunt, to the point that even the MSM is calling them out, and now at least 2 Congressional members of the GOP have proclaimed it as such. If the Dems bail now, it becomes impossible for Gowdy and co. to maintain even a semblance of it being anything else.
My guess however, is the GOP shuts it down soon after her testimony on Thursday. Like maybe as early as next week. The tables have turned, and its now a political liability for the GOP, and not hurting her polling numbers anymore.
No reason they can’t do both.
All the Democrats except for one should resign in turn during the hearing today once they use their time to denounce the hearings as a partisan witch hunt.
Leave one Democrat behind, say Elijah Cummings, to police the rest of the hearings.
I seem to remember Issa shutting the Dems down by cutting off Cummings’ mic - are there sufficient parliamentary moves to prevent the same thing while busting the GOP?
Is a quorum required to make decisions?
If so, a quorum could not be met if Dems exited en masse .
I agree that the tables have definitely turned from a positive for Republicans to a net negative and it probably even helps HRC a bit too. My only concern is that if they do bail the Republicans might drag it out and keep releasing new bogus evidence that the MSM can’t help but follow because something something “both sides”, must make it a horse race for ratings, and/or because it’s a slow news day and HRC had a great week. But that also brings me to @hjs62’s brilliant idea:
I like this a lot, but I do have one question for you. What the hell did Elijah Cummings ever do to deserve that?
Actually, it’s really a brilliant idea that benefits our side and could benefit him personally since it appears he’s going to run for Senate.
It has been good for Cummings. But I am fairly convinced that this thing is going to be wrapped up relatively soon. This statement is just putting a spur to the horse to move it down that road a little faster. So having Dems actually step down from the committee won’t ever have to happen. The GOP is going to shut it down before that point is reached.
Symbolically, I agree. Alas, one Democrat is easily circumvented. Strength in numbers and all that.
If the committee has no credibility now … why wait until after HRC testifies to resign?
You are assuming they have enough sense to do that. I’m not at all sure they do.
Elijah Cummings,Ranking Member (MD-07); Adam Smith (WA-09); Adam Schiff (CA-28); Linda Sanchez (CA-38); Tammy Duckworth (IL-08)
I think Schiff is a “top democrat” only to a lazy press corps, but I believe all the Dems were selected because they served on other Benghazi investigation panels previously. Most Americans aren’t that into this committee, so if Dems walk out it won’t make even a ripple.
Elijah Cummings was the first name that popped in my head. Any other Democrat would probably suffice.
They will. Not only is it bad for them electorally right now (and it is), without an actual Leadership in place, Gowdy is having to weather the stones and arrows alone. And he doesn’t like it, and is poorly equipped to do so. So there is personal motivation, with no Leadership to steel his spine to continue.
