My guess is, Manafort walks this back by Monday, even though he is tip toeing around the question as best he can. He’s already gotten one talking to about speaking for Trump…this falls into the same category.
There is a much deeper issue going on here than just where the money is coming from. Trump as head of the republican ticket, accepting money from the RNC, IS beholden to run on their platform. And he has serious disagreements with the generic republican platform. Which is why so many down ticket GOPers are going to actually be running AGAINST Trump.
So what do the donor arms of the republican party do? Fund Trump who is off on his own platform, but IS the head of the ticket? Or fund all the people who will be running ads against Trump, or at the very least, running ads putting as much distance as possible between them?
My reaction exactly…if this campaign moves forward as it is now, with Trump’s positions alienating virtually every group he needs to have any hope of winning (Hispanic registrations up from 11 to 13 million and new registrants heavily opposed to him and women aghast at his statements) how many “fat cats” are going to pony up their bucks for this guy? Quite a few of them were hosed last time around at Karl Rove when they got so little for their investment. If they fork over now, knowing how shaky the Trump chances are and the risk of a landslide, methinks their most likely move is to send it to down ticket candidates in hopes of avoiding a run of the table in the Senate and even the House.
What evidence there is so far is that Trump’s lifelong MO has been getting other people to pony up the bucks. Nobody has yet accounted for that money he supposedly raised for vets instead of taking part in a Fox debate (he claimed his rich buddies gave him something around six million) and those who have tried to analyze his giving report it seems to rely heavily on “freebies” like rounds of golf or stays at one of his resorts that he can write off as business expenses.
if it comes down to being forced to start digging into his own pocket, one wonders just how deep he is going to shove his very large digits.
Exactly, it’s going tho cost at least a billion $$ to run in the general. Not only doesn’t he have it, I just can’t fathom even Trump being stupid enough not to take whatever cash he can get his hands on.
This is just another issue that many thought would be an issue for Clinton in the general that really, really won’t be. Much like her quarter million dollar speaking fee won’t matter when she can point to Trump’s $1.5 million speaking fee.
