Discussion: Too Many Girlfriends: Feds Allege Menendez Helped Donor Secure Visas For Foreign Models

I absolutely agree. Small ball is giving it too much credit. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of letters exactly like these written every year by Senators and Representatives-- written on behalf of friends, relatives and constituents. And anyone who has had any experience with the arbitrary visa decisions by our embassies knows that these types of letters help cut through the nasty, inconsistent bureaucratic decisions made by the Counselor Service. Considering all the real money that goes into the political system by special interests to buy - and I use that term advisedly - our elected representatives, this is really an unimpressive indictment. I hope Menendez fights it all the way,

It’d be interesting to know the ratio of letters written on behalf of a John/Jane Q. Public versus the letters written by a senator on behalf of a donor who donates hundreds of thousands of dollars, private travel, stays at villas, etc. And that’s on top of the chicas, pun intended.

It sounds like you’re saying: Everybody does it. And if everybody does it, it must be OK. Do I misunderstand?

So if it really is like you call it ā€œsmall ballā€ because the political system is rife with nepotism like this, then why are federal charges being brought on such trivial charges? Are you suggesting it might be politically motivated? The MSM seems to be heavily implying this, even if it’s never stated outright, that this might have something to do with Menendez’s fierce opposition to Obama’s decision to try to come to an agreement with Iran or his opposition to his rapprochement with Cuba.

I couldn’t get my own foreign models into the country because I didn’t have Bob writing letters for me. I’ve had to do without for many many years. Now I know how it’s done, you people want to shoot me down before I get something going? Can’t we have a grace period?

Not just ā€œwomenā€, but ā€œforeign womenā€. WTF! Apparently the good doctor never heard of American exceptionalism… Or at least he believes American women are not all that exceptional.

Is there any politician honest in the state of NJ…who hasn’t been driven to suicide like the Republicans did to Tom Schweich in Missouri?

Ha! Perhaps Menendez’ fierce opposition to Obama’s decision to try to come to an agreement with Iran and his opposition to Obama’s rapprochement with Cuba might have something to do with the Justice Dept.ā€˜s investigations into Menendez’ corruption?

I don’t consider $750,000 to be small ball. Also, how much did that sum influence the election? And if it did, then it helped a crook who has no right to be in congress stay there.

And yes, maybe they all do it but it’s time they started finding themselves being weeded out. Just my opinion.

When I can use something in a comment related to a film, a song, a few lines, or an image, it’s a good day

The US visa process is ridiculously complex and intimidating, and I’ve been involved in cases of students who were denied, only because of political paranoia. In the face of that, its particularly galling that the Senator(s) would blithely, and with entitlement, assure travel permission for their buddies’ girlfriends and other sycophants, while leaving rickety and alienating system untouched.
