Discussion: Tom Cotton: Trump Should Fire Leandra English, Anyone Who Disobeys Mulvaney

I guess we aspire to greatness. IMHO, the US democracy has become like a Hollywood vision of what a democracy looks like. Just for example, the most popular US President - i.e., the type of President that we seem to actually want - is a television character, Josiah Bartlet.

Both English and Mulvaney were on site Monday, both claiming to run the agency, CNN reported.

Leaving aside the question of which side’s legal interpretation is correct, this is a pretty damn awkward state of affairs for the employees. Especially for the higher-level staff who are in the position of directly interacting with the disputed office.

Hopefully the court will act swiftly, because at the moment I don’t know how these employees are supposed to decide whose orders to follow.

Seems like the right course of action would be for both Mulvaney and English to stay clear of any decision-making until the court clarifies who is in charge. Leave the career civil servants to do their thing in peace until the court decides whether Mulvaney or English is their boss.

Not many senators are in the running to be Trump’s Top Lap Dog, but then not many people can guzzle a gallon of rancid, orange jizz with a smile.

Why go through all the showmanship? Need ratings? Why not just appoint a permanent director? And then have Senate confirm?

It would be a totally awful person, no doubt, and would lead to the ruin of the agency, but isn’t that Trump’s point?

Leave death and destruction behind?

It also appeals to those who just adore authoritarian, “strong” leaders. Cotton hates all of the right people and, as long as that holds true, you have to consider him to be a good contender for the Republican nomination in whatever year he chooses to run. (Now whether he can manage a campaign, raise funds, and do all of the other things necessary to secure a nomination, who knows?)

…and you should probably STFU Cotton and let the LAW take it’s course. We’re not a dictatorship yet.

Given that the current administration wants to disband the agency anyway, doesn’t this give them the leg they needed to stand on? Simply disband it as a rogue agency and let the chips fall where they may?

I wouldn’t think so, but logic doesn’t apply to this bunch anymore.

Cotton is close to Louie Gohmert in IQ. or is that vise versa? Eh, a moron is a moron is a moron.

Run for office- the 2018 elections are less than a year away! And if Trump and Louie Gohmert can get elected what’s to stop a qualified candidate?

Become a Precinct Committee Officer, sometimes it’s a Ward officer. You’ll meet with neighborhood Dems and get out the vote. Find good citizens willing to run for office.

Register people to vote. If you need to help people overcome the GOP-led Voter run-around help them do that.

Run for School Board. Make sure Civics is being properly taught. Think a majority of America knows how government works? Just 26% of eligible voters in America voted for Trump and half of eligible voters stayed home last November. Today’s 12-year olds will be voting for President in 8 years.

Run for Mayor, City Council, County Commissioner, Borough Assembly.

Get appointed to your Planning Commission. Know everything going on in your community.

Run for State Legislature or Congress. The next census is in 2020, just over 2 years from now, when we redraw Congressional Districts.

And get rid of GERRYMANDERING! Safe GOP seats gave us such intellectual giants as Louie Gohmert and Steve King. In most cases it’s the state Legislature that draws Congressional boundaries. Make it FAIR, OPEN and HONEST! We can do this!

Overturn Citizens United. Money is NOT speech and Corporations are NOT people- at least not until Texas executes one, and overturn any voter ID laws that are clearly an attempt to disenfranchise the poor and people of color.

Perhaps the legal principle that the specific controls over the general should apply here, in which case what the act that created this agency says about the matter would control. But no doubt some tendentious sophist would argue the opposite.

It’s hard to see Tom Cotton getting 51 % of the American people to subjugate themselves to him. I imagine you’re right about his motives but It’s doubtful the GOP would run another Putin lover.

Which means of course that Mulvaney will be sticking his nose into every descision that crosses his path to make sure things stay nice and murky.

He’s probably not planning on doing on any this, but it sounds so familiar from what we know about how campaigns start; find a target, beat it to death, bask in the 15 minutes, and then find there are 25 other people doing the same thing.

The “rule of law” is a concept that requires some intelligence and education to grasp. Cotton doen’t do that stuff. Nor is Rule of Law a good jingo which Cotton does do. It will go to court and the Judges politics will make the decision. All you have to do is get the name of the Judge that will rule and go to his or her Wiki page. If a GOP’er put him on the bench…it’s Mulvany. If a Democrat did its English. It’s become that easy now.
